From: aluko@leland.Stanford.EDU (Stephen Goldschmidt) Newsgroups: rec.org.sca Subject: finding your local SCA Date: 6 Jan 92 20:59:35 GMT Dear Curious Readers: Here on the Rialto, we are often asked, "How does one join the SCA?" The best way to "join" the SCA is to contact the local group nearest you and start doing things with them. Most local groups hold regular meetings for business and/or socializing, many local groups go to events together and share ideas and skills, and many publish a newsletter that keeps you informed of what's happening in your area. There so much for new people to learn that it is better to get "indoctrinated" locally rather than via the Rialto -- though we welcome your questions, especially if they are specific and likely to intrest many people! Since I don't know contact people for the every local group in our Known World, I'm posting the names, addresses, and (home) phone numbers for the Seneschal(e)s of the Twelve Kingdoms and also for the Corporate Offices of the SCA, Inc. If you call or write the appropriate Seneschal(e) at home, (s)he can give you the name of your local group and the contact person for it. Please do not call any of these people after 10 pm (their time!). Many of these people hold other (less demanding :-) jobs during the week, so you may have to leave a message if you call during working hours. If you write, enclose a SASE or International Reply Coupon for best results. Please be polite--these are VOLUNTEER officers of the SCA. If you want to receive the Corporate and Kingdom newsletters, or wish to hold any office within the SCA, you should become a sustaining member. To do this, you write to: The Society for Creative Anachronism, Inc. Office of the Registry P. O. Box 360743 Milpitas, CA 95035-0743 (USA) The annual cost (for US and APO addresses) is US$25, and I urge you to get their form before sending a check. You can also get general information about the SCA and pointers to local groups from this office. Their phone number is (408) 263-9305. I suggest calling between 9am and 5pm Pacific Time. There's also an on-line list of "couriers" -- Rialtans who will pass your electronic messages to other people in their local groups. The list is maintained by "nnpeterson@watcgl.waterloo.edu" (Neil N. Peterson). You can also search for someone in your area in the on-line "Rolls Ethereal", an unofficial directory of Rialto members. This list is maintained by "inmet!justin@uunet.UU.NET" (Mark Waks). Both lists (and various other useful data) are available to Internet users via anonymous ftp from meadow.stanford.edu (36.64.0.20). The files are, unfortunately, more than a year out-of-date.
