As some of you know, as of the first of September I become the new editor of TI. (I'm not certain if this is another sign of Pelican-ish insanity, but....;-) ) Lady Alys had intended to keep the magazine until January, but her modern-world employers have made her an offer too good to refuse, and so she is finishing up her last issue, Fall. My first issue will be Winter, and soon Lady Alys shall be enjoying, I hope, her well-deserved rest. This has not been an easy year for any of our colleagues who serve at the corporate level, and I thank Alys for her care in making sure the transition of editors happened smoothly and easily. We had not expected to change editors until the depths of winter, but here it is the dog days of summer, and the change is upon us. As with any change of hands, there will be changes in TI under my editorship. What they will be are still undecided as I write this letter today, but there are some things I wanted to talk about for you, our consumers and the folks for whom we work. Many of you have asked for more pieces on what has come to be called "Inter-Kingdom Cultural Anthropology." These are pieces, like the series of essays by Jessa d'Avondale, about how things are different in different parts of this known world. We are a truly international, intercultural society, and yet we know very little about practices in kingdoms not our own. One of the distressing statistics about the Society today is that many people who move from Kingdom to Kingdom simply disappear once they reach their new homes, and at least part of the answer is culture shock. Perhaps if we published more information that compares and contrasts our various cultures, we can help people better understand the various cultures (there is not just one!) of the Society. It is also true that one of the lessons we've learned over the last year is that people hold differing basic values in different Kingdoms. If the Interkingdom Council and Grand Council are to get good advice from us, we need to think about what those underlying values are. You have asked (in the response cards, and in other letters and feedback) for more pieces on how to enhance our re-creation of the Middle Ages and Renaissance; more on how to make or build things for our use. You have also asked for discussions on issues much as we talk about them on this, the Rialto. The art director, Jarl Irel, and I want to satisfy your wants and still balance them against the needs of the magazine and the organization. It's not going to be easy. ;-) I've been talking to Mistress Aelflaed about ways to improve the timeliness of the information from the Corporate office, and other things that have been a problem in the past. We may not solve everything by Winter, but we _are_ trying. ;-) At any rate, in order not to consume great bandwidth with my philosophy, let me present some of my wish list: * Historical articles: particularly things which talk about the way life happened for the folks we are studying; facts which SCA-folk bandy about but never really study (are there really more fighters on the field at Pennsic than most medieval battles? Were tomatoes really held to be poisonous in period? What _are_ archeologists finding in those middens?) * Article(s) on how Crown Tourneys happen in all the kingdoms: how often, how many fighters, rituals & assumptions * Fealty oaths: who swears, what the oaths are, what they mean to the people giving and receiving them. * A & S competitions: judged? not judged? County Fair? Written criteria? anonymous judging? * "Eastern Rite vs Western Rite": Is there such a thing? What are the underlying assumptions? and so on. One of the things which I have enjoyed in other SCA-related publications is the Forum or Interchange sections, where questions are posed and folk write in with answers. I am wondering if we could make such a thing work for TI? TI has in the past been leery of publishing information that discusses the underlying structure and makeup of the Society. The past year's upheavals have taught us that we must all think about what the Society is and what it means to us. And so, I solicit well written, coherent articles about what the Society is and what it could be. Any issue which we debate at feasts, on the Rialto, at post revels, in parking lots, or in our livingrooms at local meetings is worthy of consideration by the Society as a whole. As usual, we will present a balance of ideas, and will print only those essays which are articulate, mature, and considerate of the fact that all of us have close-held beliefs and philosophies. But send me proposals for your ideas, no matter what they are. I will publish responses to these essays, particularly shorter, articulate responses. I will continue to take submissions in electronic format: DOS preferred (MS-Word, ascii, or RTF are best), Macintosh acceptable; email, ftp (contact me for the address), and html equally preferred. Paper (doublespaced and clearly readable) is of course also perfectly acceptable. Faxes are acceptable, but because my fax software optically scans the submissions into electronic format, faxed submissions may require an extra round of editing and are thus less preferred. This is a project I am _very_ interested in: it was on my list of things to tackle (altho not on the _very_ top!). So, I am looking for two things: Publications you enjoy and think others would, too A coordinator who will keep up the list and make corrections, additions, etc. I suspect that this list could, like the RIALTO FAQ, eventually become a net and email resource. The main intent of the the Period division is to encourage the use and construction of period style gear in SCA archery. Modern style bows and arrows may still be used in the competition, as in the current Open division. But if you use period style bows and arrows, you will not get a bonus on your score. If you have made the period style equipment that you are using, you will get a larger bonus. The bonus should also remove the advantage modern equipment may have. If you can make your own equipment, it will be to the advantage of your kingdom for you to make it for others, and to teach them how to make it as well. If all three of your kingdomsÕs top archers, in the division, are using period style equipment or better still, have made the gear they are using, the bonus points would make a major difference in your kingdomÕs score by up to 20 per cent. There are now enough bowyers making self bows of all types that the price for a bow is now longer over $300, with a six month wait. And with the books on bowery that have come out in the past few years it is possible to make your own for under sixty dollars using a stave of Yew or Osage Orange or less for other good bow woods. Or even under ten if you use a board from a lumber yard. Self arrows are easy to make requiring only two or three pieces of hacksaw blade and a small round file in order to make the self nock. Due to the limited number of crossbow scores I have been receiving, I am considering dropping the crossbow division and allowing crossbows to compete in the Open and Period divisions. But they will not be allowed front sights. Both modern and period style crossbows may compete in the Open division, but only period style crossbows in the Period division. In the Open division modern style crossbows would be limited to six arrows in the speed rounds, but in the period division there would be no limit.
