This summer eight week-long seminars are scheduled: 4 in Provence in June, 2 in July and 2 in August in the Poitiers-Saintonge area. Approximately half the time will be spent visiting sites; the other half is spent learning to cut stone (beginners and advanced levels) in the traditional manner, with hand tools only. Beginners will learn to dress the face of an irregular stone for wall building, and to trace, cut, and assemble an arch. More advanced participants will learn mouldings and columns, bas-relief decorative sculpture and an approach to sculpting capitals. The workshops are led by David Campbell, a sculptor and stone-cutter with 15 years experience in France, including much restoration work on medieval churches and castles. Languages of instruction: English and French. The cost of the seminars is about 3600 French Francs per week.
