misstag inkludera Nordmark i sändlistan.

600-1600 =E4r

Pre 16th century is, strictly seen, everything before 1500. A decent
estimate for the average start of the renaissance in Europe.

With regard to fire-arms, it seems that in the SCA fire-arms and gunpowder
is something invented after 1650... Hardly anyone ever considers or discusses
them. Strange... they would be so much fun. An English reenactment group was
at Glimmingehus a few weeks ago, with cannons and all. Great fun!

Now let's have a stone-age event, and try to push back that lower boundary!

Ralph

At the last Pennsic there was one lecture on period artillery, and one
called "The care and and feeding of 15th century handguns" - including
hands-on experience! Unfortunately I didn't have time for any of them, but
I definetely believe the SCA is relaxing on the subject.

del brukar saetta startpunkten redan 330 daa romarrikets huvudstad flyttas

oever huvudtaget aldrig blandar in renaessansen (detta luddiga begrepp) utan

"Western" måste man väl

Hello, I have a small question...hm... is it true that the =
"Nordrike"-people
in Sk=E5ne called our site that was booked for SCA-Double Wars and =
claimed there is no more SCA around and rebooked the site for =

basically taking it from the SCA....??

Medeltidsfoereningen Torsheim (former SKA Torsheim) booked the site from
Thursday to Sunday. As far as I know the site can not be booked by private
persons, and the SCA group here is not legal (yet). Torsheim has _always_
used these days for Knaeckebroedskriget and will continue to do so. Besides,
it's the same people doing the stuff, and SCA people are just as welcome
as they always have been. I'm not sure who's officially autocrat, but
the first weekend and up to Wednesday are reserved in Janna Spannes name
(I think). So if there's an autocrat for the Magna Carta part, we can
organise the event as we have the last three years.

Salve!

I 'Corpora' st=E5r det:

   II. SOCIETY EVENTS

      D. REQUIREMENTS FOR PARTICIPANTS. Anyone may attend Society
events provided he or she wears an attempt at pre-17th century
      dress, ...

(URL http://www.sca.org/laws/corpora.hbk.html).

I 'Scope of the Society: Period and Culture', vilken ing=E5r i
'Organizational Handbook' precis som 'Corpora', och =E4r en mycket
b=E4ttre handledning f=F6r os=E4kra medlemmar, st=E5r det endast:

The Society is based on the landed nobility of the European Middle
  Ages and Renaissance.

D=E4r st=E5r =E4ven

Our activities range very widely, including a much broader span of
time and culture than most groups in the "living history" movement
  try to sample.

och

If we hold a Roman games, the participants are assumed to be period
Europeans playing at ancient Rome; you can try to act like a real
ancient Roman, but you can't complain if the atmosphere is not what
you regard as authentic. Likewise, you can be an Asian or African
guest at a European court, but you cannot recreate your homeland
outside your own household - like any long-term visitor in a foreign
land, you are the one who will have to adapt to the customs you find
  around you.

och till sist

Since members have free choice of what areas they will explore, it
follows that Society branches can not specialize.

s=E5 man m=E4rker att BoD har f=E5tt en del kritik f=F6r att man inte
begr=E4nsat SCAs tidperiod (och geografiska t=E4ckning) ytterligare.

Howdy, F|rgive mig for speaking so very d}lig svenska, but jag har a
friend som var at Pennsic this sommaren.

m{nniskor reagerar p} sm} obetydliga trivialiteter.

Greetings all,

I've been asked to forward the other war reports that were on the
Calontir list. I just got another copy, I deleted mine after I read them.
So, if Pennsic war reports from a Calontir perspective don't interest you,
Please delete the next few emails from me. :)

> Pennsic After-Actions, Part 2: Thursday Bridge Battle
>
> Thursday started early again, and we marched out of camp about 8:15 AM with
> 40-odd fighters including 10 or 11 scutums. We were joined by 8 mercenary
> bodyguards and the small Outlands force, so we totaled about 60 or so. The
> first battle was the first bridge battle, no face thrusts. We had a medium
> sized bridge (14'?), and the side holding two out of three bridge centers
> would win. The Ansteorrans were sent forward to take the center, but didn't
> quite make it before being forced to halt and spear duel. Next, the 20 or
> so Chux went forward and drove the East back, and we formed a down and
> locked wall with side doors a haybale past center. By this time, the
> Midrealm household Darkmoon (yellow and black flat shields) had formed a
> good locked line opposite us. We asked the Chux and Ansteorrans to
> withdraw, but the Chux preferred to throw themselves on Darkmoon. Result:
> about a dozen Chux dead, against one Dark Moon scutum killed.
> Thus began the main battle on our bridge. We would send out skirmishers
> to duel, but the Darkmoon shields were heavily overlapped and got excellent
> anti-hook artillery support, so we pulled few over. The spear duel was
> going only slightly in our favor. We did finally make a two-scutum hole on
> the Darkmoon right (our left). Then Hyrim made his only serious mistake of
> the war, which I attribute to inexperience in both command and scutum use.
> He realized we had to close for action to get our poles into play
> (particularly the hooks). However, instead of moving up to the Darkmoon
> shields one step at a time while locked down, he had the scutums rise and
> charge. Rhianwen and I penetrated through the hole on the left, and the
> charge made all the Darkmoon artillery retreat. Unfortunately, our standing
> scutums couldn't reach down to kill the down Darkmooners, and many were
> speared down while exposed. After a hold, we had lost at least 5 scutums
> for an equal number of Darkmoon scutums. Basically, we eliminated their
> shield line, but lost our own. If we had had 80 or more Calontir fighters,
> and 15 or 20 scutums, we could have afforded the loss, but we didn't, and
> most Calontirans were now dead.
> After the initial charge, the remaining Calontirans, with significant
> Ansteorran and Midrealm support, pushed the East to their end of the bridge
> and settled down to spear duel again. The East was thinned out for a while,
> and Hyrim had received Darkyard (black trees on white shields) for a
> reserve, so he deterimined to make a breakthrough. (At least, I think Hyrim
> was still alive to command this.) The Ansteorrans, supported by the
> Calontir and Outlands remnants, broke through in good order, but Darkyard
> refused to help, and Eastern reserves bottle up and wiped out the
> Ansteorrans. Meanwhile, the Midrealm had pushed forward on the center
> bridge, but a strong Trimaris counter-attack pushed the Midrealm back past
> the center point. A pointless Ealdormere attack on the left brigde, against
> down and locked Aethelmark shields, wasted most of the Principality's
> forces. After exhausting themselves in fruitless attacks on all bridges,
> the Midrealm was too thin. The East broke through on the left bridge,
> mopped up the center, and wiped out the Darkyard forces on the right bridge
> to gain the victory.
> Lessons to Learn: Patience, and Know Your Capabilities. If the
> Midrealm had had patience, they wouldn't have wasted attacks on bridges
> where they already owned the center. If they had waited, the East had to
> come to them. On our own bridge, Darkmoon would have had to attack us
> sooner or later for the same reason. Our attack on them was ok in concept,
> but moving up to them on our knees as we have done many times in the past
> would have worked without loss. We then would have had our polearms in
> play, and the Darkmoon artillery would have backed off as they did when we
> charged. We could have them quickly killed their scutum line, and preserved
> our main line for defensive work or even a late-battle breakout.
> Darkmoon must be commended for their efforts. Their scutum work was very
> good, and their anti-hooking performance was excellent. We still outfought
> them by a little, but we could have beaten them much worse if we had been
> better handled (sorry, Hyrim). The Ansteorrans were hung out to dry by
> Darkyard--if I were an Ansteorran, I'd have been royally pissed.

>
> The castle battle was fought around noon on Thursday. The idea was to have
> a breached castle, with the attackers having an extra life to simulate large
> numbers while the defenders would have a terrain advantage. The attackers
> got to choose the breach points. Assuming you have a square on your screen,
> attackers (the Midrealm) chose to make breaches on the lower side near each
> corner, a breach on the right side near the upper corner, and one more
> somewhere else (upper left, I think).
> Ealdormere, Calontir, Northshield, and the Outlands, with a few others,
> were to attack the lower right breach, and cover the upper right one to
> prevent sallies. Aethelmark and another Eastern unit set up to form an
> inverted L with its edge near the left end of the breach, thus forming a
> small square area inside the breach (the wall formed the right side, and the
> breach itself was the bottom). They invited us in, but we sent only
> skirmishing spearmen to try to hook them down. Ealdormere covered
> Aethelmark on the left, while Calortir dueled with other spearmen on the
> right (or top of the interior square). The Outlands went up to screen the
> upper right gap.
> After a good deal of spear dueling, little was accomplished. The
> Ealdormarines couldn't hook the Aethelmark big shields very well, while the
> Calontir spearmen were only making small progress against the other unit.
> However, then someone switched Sheridan, who had one of Crag's Q-Tip hooking
> spears, over to the Ealdormarines, and the fun began. In 5 minutes he
> pulled over about 5 Aethelmark shields (Ealdormere had only managed two in

> Hyrim sent the main Calontir line in a charge at the top of the square,
> and we drove half way up the side of the castle before most of us were

> from resurrection, there was a local hold inside (not outside) the castle at
> our breach, so I stopped to talk to Finvarr. I pointed out that the 4 deep
> Ealdormere line was facing only a 2-deep Aethelmark line, and should charge.
> As soon as the inside layed on, Finnvar started yelling charge, and
> Ealdormere broke through to join up with another advancing Midrealm unit.
> Meanwhile, I had rejoined our line in time for the form up for another
> charge. I think we had 5 or so scutums, and the second charge blew through
> all organized resistance. We pinned the Eastern banner guard to the upper
> right wall just as a hold was called. The King of East had been killed, and
> he came by, complimenting everyone. His banner guard had sworn not to yield
> his banner, so he took it away from them to allow them to fight
> unemcumbered. At the lay-on, we quickly killed them, but without committing
> any atrocities, and we got their thanks for being both nice and chivalrous.
> This virtually ended the battle.
> Supposedly, two legs and one arm were broken in the battle, and tempers
> were getting quite hot elsewhere, so the pass battle that afternoon was

Need Heraldry Help?

Greetings to the Rialto from Alan Fairfax!

Everyone in the SCA has gone through the effort of coming up with a
name, and many people have attempted to design arms as well. All too
often, people come up with a name, and eventually get around to
submitting it--only to find that their name and/or arms won't pass.
Others run into problems from the other end--they're interested in a
period name and arms, but can't find a herald in the area who knows
anything about 13th century Lithuanian naming practices or what a Spanish
warrior would put on his shield.

The Academy of S. Gabriel is attempting to solve both those problems. We
are a group of heralds organized to help people in the SCA develop period
names and armory. We can offer free consultations with some of the best
heralds in the SCA, and also have a growing collection of resources for
anyone interested in names and armory. We discuss every request before we
send out an answer, so you won't get conflicting information from different
people.

The Academy Web Page can be found at

http://www.us.itd.umich.edu/~ximenez/s.gabriel/

Our email address

s.gabriel@umich.edu

People without net access are, of course, welcome to talk to us;
please send an SASE and information on what you're looking for to

Alan Terlep
1617 Washtenaw
Ann Arbor, MI 48104

The Academy has totally open membership, and we are looking for more
people. Even if you don't have a great deal of heraldic experience,
you're more than welcome to join and learn.

Please spread the word--if you have a friend who needs heraldic
advice, tell them about us, or give this to your local herald.
If you have a relevant Web site, put us in it--we are trying to
reach as many people as possible.

In service,

Alan Fairfax

	Hej,
Searching a bit around the disk, I've found some nice pictures in your
directory Bilder, and I really wonder where they come from, because I'm
very interested in Sweden's story. I hope you didn't mind me to look at
what you've got.

The Archery Masterworks competition at Pennsic XXV was done on
Aug 13th. There were two classes for entries: Period (in which articles
were judged for accurate replication and documentation among their
attributes) and SCA Artifact (in which form, function and ingenuity were
the primary attributes and not requiring documentation). All articles
could only be entered in ONE class. There were over 40 entries and all
of them were of very high quality. The scoring was tight and took a long
time with many discussions among judges on fine points of technique.

IN THE PERIOD CLASS the winners were (in order):
Elkin du Verre .....................for a commemorative arrow ....19.2
Ailean Mac an Daroch...........14thC Crossbow.....................18.7
Tnek the
Ainissestor... arrows.......................................... .17.4
Eve Stoneheart......................flemish bowstring.............16.2
Grant Graeme de Menteith......Arab Returning Arrows......... .....16.0
Geoffrey St. Alban..................period targetarrows..... .....16.0
Ygraine of Kellswood...............leather bracer.................15.7

IN THE SCA ARTIFACT CLASS the winners were (in order):
Geoffrei St. Alban..................back quiver...................19.6
Grant Graeme de Menteith.....self bow.............................19.3
Kai McLean....arrows..............................................19.1
Micheala Isabella Botticello....ash longbow.......................18.7
Ailean Mac an Daroch...........crossbow (half bow style)..........18.3
Robert the Gray.....quiver........................................18.3
Trebor Stephenson ....crossbow....................................18.16

Scrolls were graciously presented by the Royalty of the East to the 1st
place winners, but all of the gentles listed in the top 7 in their
classes of entry deserve high honors as the articles were truly
outstanding and the competition was worthy of a Knowne World class event.

There is an Archery Masterwork Judging planed for Estrella War.
