The Magna Carta war is one of the two wars of the Double Wars that is run every year in Attemark in Drachenwald. This years event drew some 250 gentles, of which around 70 were fighters a 8 or so were archers. The Magna Carta war has eight war points, one for fencing, target archery, arts and sciences and heraldry on the field each, and one for each banner (totally four) held at the end of the main battle. The battle is between three and four hours long (decided by lot), and takes place over a wide area with fields, woodlands, and hilly areas. The banners are stationary, there are two in the town of Viborg, and one each in two villages that are spread far apart in the area. This year one of the town banners where actually in a castle. Each participant has five lives, and there are two resurrection points, one for each side. (The full rules are available at http://www.users.wineasy.se/gilliam/fighting/magna/rules-en.htm) The sides are the parties the Lilies and the Falcons, both only significant for being the sides of this war. The commander for the Falcons was Baron Helmuth zu Julich, the commander for the Lilies was Earl Garrick von Kopke. Previous experience shows that this war is mostly won by attrition. The losing side tend to have very few fighters left in the end. I was fighting as a polearm grunt with my household, Ravenscrag, which fought for the Falcons this year. The army was divided into three battles, each of roughly ten people. We aimed to keep the army together and find theirs, in the hope of winning the attrition battles that would ensue. Then later we would be ready to take care of the flags. The first exchange went well. The Lilies started in Viborg, as they had won last year, and chose to remain there to defend the town. We were able to take control of the town and castle after a long hard fight. After that, the battle flowed back and forth between the sides. When we managed to get the whole army together we did usually get control of the town, but we had problems with assembling our forces, and were beaten twice on fields between our resurrection point and Viborg. Although the difference weren't big, I have a feeling that we still had the upper hand in the attrition contest. About two thirds into the war, our commander was nowhere to be seen, and the job was in effect taken over by a member of our household, Sir Johann Berndt. I had also managed to borrow a spear, which at least brought up my kill ratio to double figures. The new command brought up the intensity of the battle a bit, and we were able to retake the town once more. As we figured that we had about an hour left, we sent one fighter out to take control of the village closest to our resurrection point, while a small troop was sent to contest the Lilies for the other village. As it turned out, "our" village was held, while the other force never managed to find the second village and were subsequently killed in an ambush... Meanwhile, the main force retreated from the town to drink water and see if we could assemble some more forces. When the force had reached an acceptable level, we went for the town for the umpteenth time. This time, the training we had had during the day showed, and we were able to take the town swiftly. This turned out to be a lucky move, as the end signal of the battle sounded as we were preparing to take the fort, were the last Lilies forces were walled in. In the end, each side held two banners. As the Falcons had won the fencing, the archery and the arts & sciences competition, the Falcons were still victorious in the end. The other war of the double wars is the Knaeckebroed war. Knaeckebroed is a type of bread, a hard flatbread type which has different sides, the flat side and the pitted side. Different people put the butter on different sides. Now a long time ago someone decided to have the true side determined by trial by combat, which we repeat every year. This is of course takes religious proportions, and the dividing line breaks right through households and families :-) The war is done as a conventional SCA war. This year, there were nine battles (two field battles, three bridge battles, two woods battles and two banner battles). The Field Battles. This time, I was volunteered to be commander for the "flat" side. (With some flattery...). We fielded some 25 + fighters and 5 archers. The "hollow" side had approximately 5 or so more fighters, but only two missile fighters (one archers and one javelineer). I started every battle with a brief staff meeting with people whose tactical judgement I trust. My staff for this year was Sir Prothall Wolfbane, Sir Sven Gunnarsson, Lord Gilliam Blackhorn and Lord Padruig Gliadrachan O'Ceallaigh. I have to say I've never been as methodical about this on previous occasions, and it makes a great difference. It means you have someone bounce ideas with before you make your dispositions. For the first battle, the army was divided into four battles. The first force was the combined Gefla/ Fathundria unit in the command of Sir Sven, the second Holmrike troops under Lord Gilliam, the third remaining fighters under Earl Garrick von Kopke and the forth the archers, protected by three shieldmen. The plan was a simple double envelopment scheme, having Gilliam on the left flank, Garrick in the middle, Sven on the right and the archers on the extreme right. As we knew we were outnumbered, we expected a hard fight. I set myself in a small command post/reserve with two other fighters. As the battle ensued, I noted that the opponents had hid their flanking forces behind their main shield wall. As their flanking units moved out, they encountered our flanking forces, while their centre attacked our rather weak centre. I staid back and saw how the right flank of their centre started to out flank our centre, which enabled me to get several kill-from-behinds. As I was caught in the fighting, I had no real idea what went on on the other fronts, but Sir Prothall told me that the deciding factor was that one of their units stood still for a minute, giving the right flank the opportunity to take on the opponents piecemal. Eventually, we were victorious. In the second battle, we made the same dispositions, but it did not turn out as well. Our left flank was vanquished quickly, and as our centre was our weakest unit, we could not really handle the loss. We were quickly outflanked from the left, and had to retreat in bad order. Some conclusions: We haven't developed the good tactical use of archers for these fluid scenarios yet: they had a hard time getting time to fire. Small unit leadership is always important for these battles (big news, huh?). Numbers account for much in an open field battle. The Bridge Battles There were to be three bridge battles, two without archers and one with. When we lined up for the first bridge battle, it was kind of certain that the Fat Guys (tm) household was gonna come crashing down the bridge in no time. So we prepared our welcome, with a pretty standard killing pocket. This meant several lines of shields in the middle to keep the lid on, and spears (and some polerms) to do the killing from the sides. Th first line was the Holmrike unit reinforced by Earl Garrick, the second line was Gefla/Fathundria, the rest filling up. I placed myself far back and to the side, to be able to see what was happening. This battle turned out *exactly* as planned (a rare occasion indeed!). We managed to stop the charge, (the only really crucial moment, I believe), and our spearmen had their merry way with Fat Guys and other hollowsiders. After the first charge, the hollow side never really managed to make any concerted effort, just single-fighter charges (which offered me my only kill). For the second battle, it was obvious that the pit-siders had learnt their lesson. They instead lined up for a bout of pike-fencing, with about four pikemen. We returned in kind. After about ten minutes (?), both sides having taken 2-3 losses, my men were becoming fairly impatient. I believed that the prudent thing to do would be keep up the attrition war, and and wait for the opportune moment. Despite this I felt that our morale required some action. Now you have two options. Shouting "Charge" and hoping all fighters will understand, (we hadn't prepared for this), or making sure you get a concerted effort, which takes time. I chose the latter alternative, by walking around and talking quietly to all fighters. This probably spoilt all chance of a surprise. I called charge, and the we stuck at their shield-wall, with a hold called at the worst possible moment, as usual. After that, we were toast, essentially. For the third battle, archers were allowed. Here, we had the upper hand having five archers against their three. It was clear that archers in a bridge battle precluded the "pike fencing", too. Certainly non of our pike were willing to get out there. We aimed to make sure we got rid of as many as possible of their archers, and then attrit the rest with arrows or a charge. We did get two of their archers, losing one archer and a few fighters in the process. By this time, not many arrows were left on any side. I think it was only seconds after the hollow side had had their second archer down they decided to charge, probably for fear of remaining targets for our archers. We managed to contain their charge, and then ousted the last of them in a countercharge. The warpoints were now 3-2 to the flat side. Some conclusions: * A lot of people were unhappy with allowing archery in a bridge battle. * For once in SCA combat, in a crowded situation defence is supreme. * To succeed with a charge, the first line of fighters has to get *through* a few lines deep be succesful. There is a tendency to stay and fight as soon as you reach the first line. This has to be subdued to make a succesful charge, as the pile of bodies that build up will eventually stop all movement. * The behaviour of the marshals is important to allow for a successful charge. If they calls hold at inopportune moment, any charge is doomed. * Holmrike, Gefla and Fathundria had had three war practises before the war. These helped me greatly in assessing the situation, as my melee experience would otherwise have been from the last years fighting. So, in THE FOOD FIGHT we are having the Food Count Tourney, the winner of which gets the feast for free and lots of glory. Our Guild is also searching for a fighter to defend our honour, and this fighter will be decided through another tournament. Sedan fyllar man i dem, skickar det till SCA i Millpitas och efter 2 eller 6 veckor (beroende på vilket porto man väljer) har man boken.
