The first multiuser game (Multi User Dungeon - MUD) first occured on the Internet from the United Kingdoms. After some years the definition changed to Multi User Dimension, since the game no longer dwelled in narrow dungeons.
Today MUDs are frequent on most of the greatest universities in the world and are growing in popularity, not only among computer science students.
