Summary: announcing TK for Microsoft Windows 3.1

This message is to announce the general availability of TK-WIN, the
TCL/TK package ported to Microsoft Windows. We consider this version
to be an Alpha release, so be patient with any bugs/problems you might
encounter. We have specific applications that we run under this
port, so we know it successfully runs some pretty complicated pieces
of TCL/TK. It does, however, have many restrictions due to the nasty
DOS environment.

The TK-WIN package is based upon TCL7.3 and TK3.6a. This port would
not have been possible if Professor Ousterhout had not written such
wonderfully clean code (Thanks!). We are placing the code in the
following location:

        ftp.ms.uky.edu:/pub/unix/tkwin-bin-withtcp.tar.gz
        ftp.ms.uky.edu:/pub/unix/tkwin-bin-notcp.tar.gz
        ftp.ms.uky.edu:/pub/unix/tkwin-src.tar.gz

tkwin-bin-* are the binaries with and without an old WINSOCK library
linked in (along with tclTCP-2.0). tkwin-src.tar.gz is the sources
that were compiled with Borland C++ 4.0.

The port was painfully performed solely by Professor Ken K. Kubota here at
the University of Kentucky. If you enjoy this package, send Prof. Kubota
a note of thanks (ken@ms.uky.edu); he'll appreciate it after all he's
been through in the last couple months:-).

We have set up a users mailing list for discussion about this port
at tk-win-users@ms.uky.edu (send requests for subscription to
tk-win-users-request@ms.uky.edu).

I cannot find the source files, although in
ftp.ms.uky.edu:/pub/tk-win there are some zip files with executables.

Will the source become available soon?

Sorry, it might take a day to straighten all this out. The
stuff in ftp.ms.uky.edu:/pub/tk-win is an old TCP version. There will
be source and executables in the next day or so in the locations
I previously named.

So, just look for it in the next day or so; if you want a preview, grab
the stuff in ftp.ms.uky.edu:/pub/tk-win.

Again, sorry for the confusion.

Eric

as you (the ones that are left) have noticed there have been som problems with
news, mainly with nn (even if it seems to work now), the problem is that
the nubers in .newsrc are higher than the ones that the server hold.
To fix this you make a reset of your .newsrc (in tin ctrl-r)
you can do this reset very easy, by running /usr/local/hack/bin/nynewsrc
it makes a copy of your old .newsrc an creates a similar one but without the
wrong numbers, if you have any problems you can send them to me.

Release of beta1.2
------------------

WebMaker version beta1.2 has just been released to a few selected beta
test sites. It features:

- Generation of global tables of contents.

- Automatic generation of indices with the options of converting:
   - into a single html file
   - into several files, one for each letter.

- Improved conversion of graphics.

- Setting of defaults for graphics conversion options in the
  configuration program.

- A new program (wmconfig) that generates a default configuration
file for a given FrameMaker document.

- Printable draft of the WebMaker User's Manual.

- Changes and Fixes in WML (WebMaker Language).

- Other Changes and Fixes.

You can see the result of these changes and upgrades in the
example accessible from the "Coming Soon in Beta 1.2" page of
our web. Also, you are welcome to have a look at the examples
on our web, from the "Examples" page, which are now converted
with beta1.2.

Mailing List
------------

In an attempt to minimise support workload we have published a
WebMaker Mailing List Request Form on our web, in the "Platforms
and Distribution" page. This streamlines the collection of
customer data and guarantees consistency.

Please feel free to fill it out, even if you are already on
our mailing list.

New test licences
-----------------

We have a backlog of requests for test licences that we are unable
to handle. Actually the interest for Webmaker went well beyond what
we had anticipated and it is absolutely necessary that we devote
some effort to automatizing the test licencing scheme, the delivery,
and get ready for the production version.

For this reason, we cannot support any more test licences until the
new scheme is in place.

The production version
----------------------

The production version is in the works, and will benefit from a lot
of detailed remarks and suggestions that we are getting from many
test sites. It is being reengineered for easier installation and
portability, faster execution, better code protection and more flexible
output.

The configuration language is being revised, and will come with a library
of ready-made templates and a tool to help configuring interactively.

We will post on the web detailed information on what is coming up,
and possibly start some debate with the users about options we are not
sure about.

The Webmaker Team.

Subject: WebMaker Beta 1.1

Hello,

Thanks for your interest in Webmaker.

The current WebMaker version, beta 1.1, has been deliverd to 60 test
sites for evaluation, spread over the platforms SunOS, Solaris,
and HP/UX. We are receiving numerous corrections and suggestions
and things are going well.

We are expecting to release beta 1.2 in about a week, which will have
the new features:

  - improved graphics conversion,
  - alphabetic index,
  - improved table of contents,
  - printable manual (draft),
  - and a number of minor improvements and bug fixes.

The first production version is planned for the end of summer and
we encourage you to monitor the WebMaker web for new developments.

If you would like to be on our general mailing list could you
please fill out the included WebMaker Mailing List Request Form
and mail it back to webmaker@cern.ch.

It is getting increasingly more difficult to support new beta sites
and thus we cannot promise any support if you insist on evaluating
the software in its current state, i.e. in beta status and therefore
incomplete and subject to changes. We encourage you to wait for the
more stable and complete production version.

If you, however, would still like to evaluate the software now please
confirm.

Best regards,

Mario Ruggier

Hello. just discovered a mail message from you in one of my old
mailboxes and I'm, not sure if I ever replied to you. If not then my
apologies for the time it's taken to get around to this.

You wanted to know if you could use my intermud system to connect to muds
using the CD intermud system. The simple answer is "no", but in fact
this is not entirely accurate. My system as it stands is not compatible
with the CD intermud system. However, you can run the CD system quite
happily alongside my system if you want to port it to amylaar.
Information on how to do this should be found in the INSTALL
documentation provided with the package. Since my system runs on CD muds
with no modification, some CD muds have begun using it as well as their
own system, so you can talk to them without having to run the CD system.

I am planning to integrate my system better with the CD system at some
point in the future, but this will still require you to be running the CD
system on your mud. This development is also very low on my list of
things todo.

You can ftp the latest versions of the intermud package and related code
from:

	rszircon.swan.ac.uk 7021

The latest release is intermud-0.61. Intermud-0.7 is under development
and should be available sometime this summer.

If you are interrested in the development of the intermud system, there
is a mailing list you can subscribe too. To do so, send email to
Majordomo@mono.city.ac.uk with the text "subscribe intermud-users" on a
line by itself in the body of the message.

	Mark / Nostradamus@Zebedee.
