As an independent company, 3Dlabs will focus on providing OEMs with enabling silicon and software technologies for 3D graphics, which is becoming an essential ingredient of multimedia computing. The management buyout has been led by the original founders of Pixel, including Osman Kent (President and CEO) and Yavuz Ahiska (VP Business Development), who have a majority shareholding. Tom Donohue (VP Finance and Chief Operating Officer), Neil Trevett (VP Marketing) and Raj Singh (VP Sales), all of whom formerly worked for Du Pont Pixel, comprise the rest of the strong and seasoned management team. According to market research, the demand for 3D graphics chips will reach 400,000 units per annum by the end of 1995, worth over $70M. 3Dlabs' products will enable board and system manufacturers to lower costs and dramatically increase the performance of their 3D products, when running applications such as CAD, Multimedia, Simulation, Virtual Reality and Games. The buyout has enjoyed the complete support and co-operation of DuPont. 3Dlabs has assumed the worldwide assets and liabilities of Du Pont Pixel, and will continue to supply existing products and support services to customers. All Du Pont Pixel staff have been transferred to 3Dlabs. The company was originally formed in 1984, and as Du Pont Pixel established a reputation as a leading centre of excellence for 3D graphics, with board-level accelerators and software to bring Silicon Graphics-like performance and functionality to Sun Microsystems' workstations. The first chip level product from 3Dlabs will be the GLiNT 300SX, a high performance 3D graphics processor aimed at manufacturers of IBM- compatible PCs, workstations and plug-in accelerator boards. The processor, which is already at an advanced stage of development, has successfully completed its final compliance testing and will be sampling in the third quarter of 1994. The GLiNT (TM) processor is the sixth generation of 3D products to be designed by the 3Dlabs team. 3Dlabs is a worldwide supplier of chips, software and technology for 3D graphics.
