VIRTUAL REALITY FEATURES IN ANDERSON CONSULTING'S SMART STORE

Virtual reality software from Superscape Limited is now part of the permanent
Workshop Area in Andersen Consulting's SMART STORE Europe, an international research and development centre dedicated to
the consumer industries.

According to Brian McAreavey of Andersen Consulting: "With a PC-based product
such as Superscape VRT, virtual reality is a viable proposition for retailers. In the short term, we believe that it will
be used to visualise store layouts and assist with product merchandising. In
the longer term, virtual reality could provide an interactive, visually innovative front end to a number of Business Proc
ess Re-engineering tools."

The Superscape demonstration at SMART STORE Europe begins by visualising
shoppers entering a retail outlet and then using a randomly generated shopping list to select items from the shelves.

Mr McAreavy continued: "The purpose of the demonstration is to illustrate how
virtual reality could be used in analysing the processes involved in in-store logistics, such as receiving goods and re-s
tocking shelves. Retailers could visualise various different ways of tackling
replenishment operations without having to physically move the stock until the optimum route has been identified."

Superscape VRT is an integrated suite of software editors (Shape, World,
Layout, Texture, Resource, Keyboard, Sound) which provide all that is needed to build, visualise and interact win real time wi
th virtual objects and environments. Intelligence can be assigned to any
objects, giving them 'real-world' dynamics such as gravity and friction. The software has been designed to run on standard 486
 and Pentium PCs.

SMART STORE Europe represents a significant investment by Andersen
Consulting. Similar centres have been set up in Chicago and Sydney, Australia. Visitors to SMART STORE Europe are typically senior e
xecutives from leading European retailing and consumer products companies.
They take part in tailored workshop sessions to discuss how leading thinking in the areas of business processes, technology
and organisation may impact their own business.
