Description of the Conference and the Significance of Virtual Reality Tools in
Architecture

Architecture is a natural application for computers, and even in the early
days of CAD, when software could only cope with 2D elevations, the benefits
were very worthwile. Today, CAD systems play a central role in all major
architectural practices, and provide architects with plans. sections,
elevations, line perspectives, and full colour, rendered visualizations of
interior and exterior views. Apart from the obvious benefits of computer
graphics, computer systems introduce the concepts of integrated databases,
data exchange, and scheduling tools, all within an interactive multi-user
environment.

Now that architects are familiar with working with interactive workstations,
Virtual Reality is a natural technological progression, that brings them even
closer to their virtual designs. Immersive displays will provide a much more
accurate method for assessing the success of their designs. They will be able
to walk-through their buildings in real-time and explore at first-hand, the
vistas they envisaged during the building's conceptual design.

Given the strategic importance of this topic, this conference provides a
unique opportunity to discover how virtual reality is being used to develop
new interactive visualization tools for architectural design. A programme of
international speakers will reveal the very latest developments in how VR is
providing new insights into modelling, illumination, acoustics, simulation,
safety, and visualization, and providing cost-effective solutions for current
and future design challenges.

Pre-Conference Tutorial, Wednesday 2 November 1994, 1pm-6pm
"An Introduction to Virtual Reality"
Mr Charles Grimsdale (Division Ltd, UK)
Prof John A Vince (Thomson Training and Simulation Ltd, UK)
