National Critical Technologies Concurrent Symposia
Series. Meeting rooms will be located in close proximity

10:30 VIRTUAL ENVIRONMENTS FOR TRAINING 
AND EDUCATION
R. Bowen Loftin, University of Houston--Downtown;
Robert T. Savely, Chris Culbert, and Laura Pusch,
Johnson Space Center; Mark Engleberg, Jeff Hoblit, Pat
Kenney, Tim Saito, and Mark Voss, LinCom; and Lac
Nguyen, I-NET Space Services Inc.
Researchers at NASA Johnson's Software Technology Branch
have shown that integrating virtual environments (VEs)
with Intelligent Computer--Aided Training technology can
reduce the cost and increase the availability of
training that relies on expensive and often unique
simulators.  They also have demonstrated the ability to
share VEs over long distances for collective training
and concurrent engineering.

11:00 THE SIMULATION VIRTUAL MACHINE
Kenneth Hill, Real--Time Sessions Manager,
Johnson Space Center
The SVM is a real-time simulation executive developed at
JSC for the Space Station Verification and Training
Facility.  Flexible, portable, and easily maintained,
the SVM offers applications for commercial airlines as
well as surface transportation systems such as high--
speed passenger trains.

11:30 ULTRA--HIGH--RESOLUTION MINIATURE
COLOR CRT FOR VIRTUAL REALITY APPLICATIONS
Bernie Vancil, FDE Association; Edwin G. Wintucky, Lewis
Research Center
A low--power, miniature, full--color cathode--ray tube
developed at NASA Lewis offers superior viewing
capability for helmet--mounted and virtual reality
applications.  The CRT employs an improved oxide
cathode, a single electron gun, a screen containing a
multiplicity of red, green, and blue phosphor lines, and
a movable slotted shadow mask interposed between the
screen and gun.

12:00 INTEGRATION OF SIMULATION 
WITH FIELDED EQUIPMENT USING DIS
Phil Landweer, BDM Federal 
Seamless integration of constructive, virtual, and live
simulations is achieved through use of a Distributed
Interactive Simulation (DIS) compliant interface.  Used
by the Army to integrate field equipment with a
simulated battle for training purposes, such an
architecture could be used to integrate other
geographically separate training devices--such as
simulators, computer--based training workstations, or
part--task trainers--via phone lines, digital networks,
or commercial satellite communications.
