	 Workshop on Object-based Distributed Programming

		In conjunction with ECOOP'93

	The European Conference on Object-Oriented Programming

		July 27th 1993, Kaiserslautern, Germany




With the increasing availability of powerful workstations and high
performance local area networks, there has been a corresponding
increase in the interest for object-based distributed systems.
To make beneficial use of these systems, it is important that
programmers are provided with an extensible set of linguistic
supports to express distribution related aspects such as:

	- concurrency
	- persistence
	- replication
	- location
	- protection
	- transactions
	- object interactions (asynchrony, multicast...)
	-...

The aim of this workshop is to evaluate the impact of high-level language
supports for easing the design, rapid prototyping, and implementation of
object-based distributed applications. Among the various evaluation criterias
are: flexibility, extensibility, modularity, and dependability.

The workshop is intended to bring together systems designers and users,
in such a way that the former can tell how they use these supports, and
the latter how they can make them more usable. The following questions are
of particular interests:

	Which abstraction mechanisms are important for object-based
	distributed applications? Is there any minimal kernel that
	encompasses them all?

	Is it possible to build these mechanisms so that low level
	properties can be designed dynamically per object,
		rather than statically per class? For example, one can ask
	whether persistence can be considered as an object property
	(vs. class property), which can be dynamically modified.

	To what extent can one separate high level application aspects
	from low level ones, e.g. location, persistence, replication?

	Is the object model sufficient, as a basic abstraction, to
	cover various aspects of distribution? Or is it necessary to
	introduce additional basic abstractions such as Meta-objects,
	Meta-classes, Messages Reifications ...?


Participation in the workshop (1 day duration) is by invitation only, upon the acceptance of position papers. Three copies of each position paper must be
received before May 1 1993, at the address below:

Position papers must be 2 to 5 pages long and describe the key ideas of
the author's work. They must indicate the author's name, address,
telephone and e-mail. Authors will be notified of acceptance or rejection
by May 25, 1993. Final version of accepted papers should be sent in
postscript format, in order to be distributed to the workshop participants.


The workshop will include invited lectures by prof Mario Tokoro and
prof Akinori Yonezawa, as well as a serie of selected papers presentations and
