A mechanical robot arm is controlled by users via software and a six
degree-of-freedom input device to manipulate objects in a workspace.
A crt is used to provide users with an auxiliary visual display.
Various types of kinesthetic feedback are provided to aid the user's

display, shadows and depth cueing are provided in the crt display.
The input device is equipped with mechanical force-feedback servo
motors to respond to physical contact with objects.  Part of this
thesis is devoted to a user-study of these various kinesthetic

Kilpatrick's user studies revealed that users prefered the drop
shadows over stereo for perceiving the relative depth of objects in
the scene.  The study was limited to a specific application, however,
and its results may not therefore be applicable to all potential
applications.  The display was in wireframe on a vector display.
