Late 80s, NASA Ames Research Center, VIEW (Virtual Interface
Environment Workstation) System, Scott Fisher, Warren Robinett, Mike
McGreevy (missing anyone?). It was the project which made the general
interest grow about VR, the first low cost HMD, the first glove-HMD
system, the first to introduce the point-and-fly gesture, the first to
develop 3D audio...

I think we still have to conceive something substantial which has not
been at least tried by that group, even with the "crude" technology of
8 years ago.
