From: "Michael G. Koopman" Subject: INDUSTRY: VPL's new address Date: Thu, 22 Apr 1993 11:54:19 CDT Crossposted from VIRTU-L RE-reporting.... To address the somewhat confused news concerning VPL. The following letter was published as a "Letter to the Editor" on page 10 of the Vol. 3 No. 2 March 1993 issue of Virtual Reality Report published by Meckler. +1-800-635-5537 to subscribe at $277 inst./$127 personal (US). Typos are to be forgiven, pls. --------- Virtual Reality Report -------- FROM: VPL Research DATE: February 5, 1993 To the Editor of Virtual Reality Report: There have been various news articles recently on the state of the financial health of VPL Research, Inc. which are unfortunately, in part, erroneous. We would like to correct the record and report our current status. Contrary to rumors, VPL is very much alive and shipping products on schedule. As part of its effort for cost reduction, the Company relocated its offices from Foster City, California to Palo Alto in December, 1992, and VPL retains control of its patents and technology. VPL continues to deliver peripherals and is resuming shipments of systems to its customers. Our backlog for product to ship is quite satisfying for the current marketplace. With a team of dedicated employees, we have continued to accept and fulfill orders on a timely basis to satisfy our customers. The Company held a meeting of shareholders on February 1, 1993, which was attended by many shareholders, including Jaron Lanier, Thomson CSF Ventures, Young Harvill, and Tom Zimmerman. The attending shareholders have approved the restructured company by unanimously re-electing the existing Board of Directors, and I continue to remain as President and CEO. Sincerely Yours, Jean-Jacques Grimaud ---------------------------------------- A conversation with Mr. Grimaud after he wrote the letter but before I received this issue confirms the content of the letter. VPL should have a network link up, again, shortly. Hilary McLellan of Meckler also reports, as most will know, that "... VPL was unable to payoff the [approximately $1M outstanding] loans from Thomson CSF in a timely fashion, so the French company moved to take control of the patent portfolio and fired most of the staff, including Lanier." Quoting again from the same source, "Jaron Lanier, Walter Fischer, and three other former VPL employees have formed a new company, Domain Simulations, Inc. of Redwood City, CA, that will focus on the software side of virtual reality."
