From: Steve Maddock Subject: JOB: Computer Science post at Sheffiled University, UK Date: Sat, 24 Apr 1993 11:01:57 CDT University of Sheffield, England FURTHER EXPANSION IN COMPUTER SCIENCE ONE OR MORE CHAIRS IN COMPUTER SCIENCE The University of Sheffield is continuing the expansion in Computer Science begun in 1992 and 1993, to sustain the academic momentum build up by this department in recent years. The next stage in this process is to establish a 3rd and possibly further chairs in the Department. These appointments are to commence as soon as possible, subject to negotiation. It is likely that financial resources will be available to support the research and teaching activities of the new professors. The department has research groups working in: FORMAL METHODS and SOFTWARE ENGINEERING PARALLEL PROCESSING SPEECH and HEARING NATURAL LANGUAGE PROCESSING ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE and COGNITIVE SCIENCE. GRAPHICS The successful applicants will be expected to provide academic leadership in one or more of these areas. There are around 110 graduate students and research associates in the department. The Department has recently moved into new, purpose-built accommodation adjacent to the new Engineering Library near the City centre. The University offers 70 research studentships each year together with a further number of bursaries and "top up" grants for research students (there are around 100 this year). The University also has a number of mechanisms for supporting new developments in research and teaching. The Academic Development Fund is available to support major new initiatives such as setting up new research centres. The funds available each year are L400 000 and in this past year the fund has been used to establish laboratories and centres in 6 subjects including: micro-electronic systems, fertility research, molecular materials, humanities research etc. The University Research Fund offers small grants, typically between L5 000 to L15 000, on a competitive basis. Each year around ?500 000 is available. The Curriculum Development Fund offers financial support for the development of innovative teaching activities. Around L100 000 is available each year. The degree courses taught by the department are as follows: Postgraduate taught degrees offered for 1993/94 are SOFTWARE SYSTEMS TECHNOLOGY SOFTWARE ENGINEERING AND EUROPEAN BUSINESS TECHNOLOGY EXPERT SYSTEMS ENGINEERING COMPUTER SCIENCE (SUMMER SCHOOL) ADVANCED SOFTWARE ENGINEERING PARALLEL PROCESSING TELEMATICS Undergraduate degrees taught include COMPUTER SCIENCE SOFTWARE ENGINEERING COGNITIVE SCIENCE COMPUTER SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS COMPUTER SCIENCE AND STATISTICS COMPUTER SCIENCE AND ACCOUNTANCY AND BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION COMPUTER SCIENCE AND MODERN LANGUAGES (FRENCH, GERMAN, RUSSIAN, SPANISH and probably JAPANESE) INFORMATICS (an open access course taught initially through Colleges of Further Education with students spending their final year in the Department) The University is planning to establish a new University College in the Dearne Valley, South Yorkshire as a contribution to the economic regeneration of this particular area. It is hoped that around 3 000 students will be in place by the end of the century. The college will be heavily oriented towards Information Technology, management and related subjects. Sheffield is the fourth largest city in England with varied cultural and sporting facilities. It is adjacent to the Peak District National Park, an area of outstanding natural beauty less than 30 minutes drive away.
