Just few days ago someone posted the announce of a mailing list devoted
to sonification (mapping data into audio). Maybe they can help you.

You could also try to contact rbargar@ncsa.uiuc.edu (Robin Bargar), since
they have a very interesting research in mapping complex data sets into
audio cues.

You should check the SonicFinder, a Mac Finder which uses sound icons.
It was a work by a certain Gaver (don't remember his first name). Try
to check your library under that name; I do remember I saw some of his
papers in a conference proceedings book, but I don't remember which. Sorry.
