This is Edupage, a twice-weekly summary of recent news items on information technology. It is provided as a service by EDUCOM -- a consortium of leading colleges and universities seeking to transform education through the use of information technology. CABLE, INTERNET LINK UP. Continental Cablevision Inc. is linking up with the Internet, enabling customers to plug PCs and a special modem directly into Continental's cable lines. The cable link will bypass local phone hookups and provide the capability to download whole books and other information at speeds up to 10 million bits a second. Other multimedia services are planned as well, including TV-quality video and even high-fidelity music piped through the PC. (Wall Street Journal 8/24/93 B1) ELECTRONIC MEDICAL BOOK. The Medical College of Georgia is one of the first medical schools in the country to use an electronic textbook. Designed by 12 members of the physiology faculty, the text uses animation and sound to explain blood flow, heart functions, etc. (Atlanta Constitution 8/26/93 E2) FEEL OF THE STICK. A new $130 joystick called CyberMan 3-D Controller from Logitech is being promoted as the first joystick that lets users feel the action -- such as the increased pressure you would feel as a pilot pulling your computer-simulated airplane out of a nosedive.
