We used a light beam with three mini-lamps mounted on the users head and detect their room position with two CCD-cameras. An intelligent "fuzzy-filter" has been developed to detect if there is a real head and body translation or not (head tremor and other interferences such like "pixel errors" because of the system resolution). I wrote an article about the HMD and the head tracker for a visualisation workshop which was held here in germany. At the time this article is only available in german speech.
