John Riedl ----------- CALL FOR PARTICIPATION CSCW'94 ACM 1994 Conference on Computer Supported Cooperative Work October 22-26, 1994 Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA We invite you to submit original work to the 1994 ACM Conference on Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW'94). We also hope you will mark it on your calendar and plan to attend. CSCW combines communications and computing technologies to support work and other activities in groups varying in task, size, permanence, and structure. As a field of research and development, CSCW is multidisciplinary, drawing on computer, behavioral, social, and organizational sciences, as well as management, engineering, and education disciplines. The theme for CSCW'94 will be "Transcending Boundaries -- people, places, & time." It suggests that it may be possible to build computer- supported environments, as well as a base of knowledge, that enable groups to achieve levels of coherence and consistency in their work comparable to that achieved by the very best individual minds working alone. These environments may also help groups overcome limitations of time and place so that distributed work can be done almost as readily as work done at the same location. We hope this conference -- through its technical program, workshops and tutorials; and interactions -- will help make this possibility a reality. Topics appropriate for the conference include, but are not limited to: * General theories of coordination and collaboration * Impact of cooperative work technologies on groups, organizations, and societies * Design of computer and communication-based applications that support cooperative work * Design of operating systems, networks, databases, or other systems infrastructure for cooperative work applications * Empirical studies of cooperative work * Methodologies and tools for analyzing cooperative work * Experiences with technology for cooperative work * Evaluative summaries and retrospectives of work in an area of CSCW GENERAL SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS Send six copies of each submission. The program will be on continuous play at the conference, and will be published and sold by ACM as a special edition of the SIGGRAPH Video Review. Videos undergo a full refereed review process for technical content and for production quality. Like technical papers, the video should represent a significant contribution to the CSCW community and should be of professional quality. Possible topics include, but are not limited to: * Cooperative work practices that have implications for CSCW * Evaluation techniques * Demonstrations of innovative research prototypes * Demonstrations of innovative aspects of commercial systems (not marketing) * Visions of the future Specific submission requirements * Send a single tape, preferably 5-8 minutes long. Longer tapes will be subject to stricter review criteria. Rough videos "in progress" will be considered, but will (if tentatively accepted) be subject to a second review process after final production. * Include standard cover page. * Include a statement (a) confirming that you are willing to allow the video to be shown at CSCW T94 and published in the SIGGRAPH Video Review (with copyright retained by you); and (b) providing a publication history (if any) of the video. * Include a 100-word abstract of the work, on its own page. The page should include title, author, and contact information. The abstract will appear in the SIGGRAPH package and the Proceedings, if the video is accepted. * Include a 2-page (maximum) summary of the work presented, to be used by the video review committee.
