From: John Wann Subject: SCI: Binocular Deficits in VR Date: 9 Jul 1993 11:20:37 In response to the posting of the article from: The Daily Yomiuri. July 7, 1993 Re: Ocular problems following the viewing of 3-D graphics We have also looked at these problems in the use of HMD's. Rather than viewing periods of 1 hour (used by the Waseda group), we found deficits of binocular vision following just 10 minutes of cycling around a virtual city wearing a VPL LX HMD. A group of 20 subjects were examined and we observed significant changes in heterophoria, associated 'phoria and near point of convergence. We have just found similar results with another commonly used HMD. The original study is in press for Opthal & Physiol Opt. and a position paper on the fundamental problems of re-creating 3-D visual space from 2-D arrays has been submitted elsewhere.
