VOYAGE OF DISCOVERY TOUR NAME THE E-MAGAZINE CONTEST UPDATE ================================== Thanks very much to the many of you who submitted entries for our magazine naming contest! The response to our call for entries was enormous and truly indicative of the vast amount of imagination available via electronic news and mail. Though there can be only one winning name, so many people submitted great entries that it seemed like a good idea to share some of the more interesting entries with our readers. Many people suggested that we select a name that recognizes Silicon Graphics' leadership position in the color graphics workstation market. Words such as "spectrum" and "rainbow" were very popular among submissions. Robert Delucca of John Hopkins University gave us the physics answer of "roygbiv", which is an acronym for the colors of the spectrum. bukys@cs.rochester.edu employed the word IRIS as his muse, as did others, but he had a few twists, including "Purple Pupil" and "Dilated Pupil". Yet others such as Ed Sternin of Brock University recommended that we play on the word "silicon," or be a little more subtle by using "sand" in the name. "Sand Piper" was an entry by Gary Goldberg of Digex. Donald J. Siegel of Case Western University combined this concept with Silicon Graphics' commitment to leading edge technology by proposing the name "Silicon Magic". Were we to pick the most submitted name it would be SGEye, as this magazine will serve as a way for customers to keep an eye on what others are doing with Silicon Graphics workstations. In this same vein, LIN Feng of the Computer Graphics Centre in Germany submitted "SGI Alliance," to emphasize to all that this magazine will keep customers, developers, and Silicon Graphics in touch with one another. Many people submitted entries containing part or all of one of our existing product names, such as Indigo or Power Challenge. And other focused on virtual reality as a naming theme. Brian Beckman of Microsoft suggested "The Matrix," referring to William Gibson's books on virtual reality, while others like Navjot S. Kailey of the University of Alberta went for atmosphere with "Virtual Cafe." Russell Crywolf had much more explosive suggestions, for example, using the acronym "MINE" - Monthly Informative Newsletter by E-mail. A seemingly forward looking entry along the magazine lines came from Steven Armijo of the University of New Mexico when he suggested "Silicon Graphics Illustrated". Another popular entry theme was the use of modifications of traditional newspaper or newsletter names. Chris Myer of Harris suggested, "The Graphigram;" Bill Sutphin of the U.S. Navy suggested "The IRIS Examiner;" with an eye toward the classical, Richard Muise of Acadia University submitted "The Crimson Letter;" combining this with virtual reality, several contestants, including Chir Chu of the University of Alaska, entered "The Virtual Rag." Many people took to heart our request to keep submission names irreverent and imaginative. Integrated Digital Media Capabilities The Indy system continues Silicon Graphics' leadership in digital media by integrating a vast array of professional-quality audio/video capabilities in a PC-priced package. The system is the only computer to come standard with a color digital video camera, IndyCam*, which Silicon Graphics developed with Teleview Research of Palo Alto, California. The IndyCam can mount on top of the color monitor or be moved to capture video and still images throughout the user's environment. The system also features front-panel audio volume adjust buttons, a digital video port, composite and S-video inputs, an analog microphone, six-channel digital audio processing and Photo CD support. Highly integrated analog and digital video enables random access editing, video mail and desktop conferencing. Using Silicon Graphics' bundled suite of digital media software tools, users can capture full-resolution, full-frame video to disk memory, randomly edit on-line video files, and capture and store still video images. Also with the standard Indy system, users can record and edit two-channel digital audio tracks. With the optional Indy Video* add-in card, along with a full selection of third-party software and hardware products, Indy users have access to a complete and affordable desktop video production environment. Indigo Magic Desktop Environment The first media user interface which brings the ease of use of Macintosh and PC systems to Silicon Graphics computers--while maintaining the power of RISC workstations--also is part of the Indy desktop system. First available on the Indy platform and soon on all Silicon Graphics systems, the Indigo Magic* user environment is the most advanced icon-based user interface available. The new environment features simplified system management, enterprise-wide search and find capabilities, access to peripherals from the desktop and Macintosh and PC connectivity. Indigo Magic allows users to customize their individual environments, allowing them to configure an assortment of desktops, each of which can be reduced and stored as an icon. Other features of the new interface are simple, point-and-click software installation and printing that involves merely dragging and dropping a file onto the printer icon. The new user environment includes a free CD featuring interactive computer games developed exclusively for Silicon Graphics systems. Powerful Color Graphics The Indy system also comes standard with a new color graphics system that features the world's fastest X performance, delivering up to 1.4 million 10-pixel X lines/sec. The full-featured, high-performance 3D graphics capabilities offer 26K triangles/sec. Displaying virtual 24-bit (dithered 8-bit) or true 24-bit color, the system also supports stereo viewing with a built-in port for 3D stereo glasses. The new system supports three color monitors: a 15-inch color monitor featuring 1,024-by-768 resolution, or 16-inch or 19-inch colors monitors with 1,280-by-1,024-resolution. Wide Expansion and Throughput Capabilities Indy answers system throughput challenges with a 267MB/sec GIO 64 system bus, a 400MB/sec memory bus, and a 10MB/sec fast SCSI-2 bus. Indy provides an array of connectivity options, including an Ethernet 10 Base-T port, two serial ports, a parallel port and a digital network (ISDN) port. Ethernet AUI and two GIO bus ports are also featured. The system also supports floppy optical drive capabilities that allow users to read and write to PC and Macintosh software files. Leading-Edge Applications The Indy system supports more than 1,300 applications from leading software developers whose products are used in technical and creative applications environments, including architecture, CAD/CAM, CASE, chemistry, database management, film and video production, geographic information sciences, photo retouching, technical publishing and training. Many software providers create packages specifically to take advantage of Silicon Graphics' advanced graphics and applications throughput capabilities. Optional software solutions provide Macintosh and Microsoft Windows* emulation capabilities with performance equal to or better than the most popular PC and Macintosh configurations.
