Announcing a Major New Standards Magazine:
 
STANDARDVIEW
ACM Perspectives on Standardization
 
Premiere Issue September 1993
 
As the push for standardization becomes international in scope,
understanding the development and use of standards becomes critical.
StandardView addresses this need with its focus on standardization's
theory and practice (including reasons not to standardize) as it
touches the daily work of information technology professionals
everywhere.
 
Producers and users of standards in business, government, research and
academia will stay informed in this crucial area by subscribing to
this cross-disciplinary new quarterly journal from ACM.
 
Theme issues planned on the following topics:
 
Human-Computer Interaction: This issue will cover theoretical and
applied studies, applied ergonomics and related legislative and legal
matters.
 
The Government and Standardization: What is government's role in
standardization in Europe, North America and the Pacific Rim? What are
standardization's social implications as an industrial policy tool?
 
Objects and Objectivity: This issue will cover the theory and practice
of object-based standardization, the economic rationale for objects
and the implications of objects for information technology users and
providers.
 
Open Systems as a Practical Discipline: Articles will encompass the
definition of "Open Systems" and the efforts and discipline necessary
to establish a true open system.
 
Internationalization and Localization: Multilingual and multicultural
software is increasingly important. Is standardization appropriate in
this area?
 
Users and Standardization: Do users care about standardization? Do
current standards meet their needs? How can user needs be defined?
