	         	OOPSLA '93 Workshops Program

 Workshops are a means for experts to meet and discuss issues with a
selected focus in an atmosphere which fosters the active exchange of
ideas among researchers and practitioners. They provide a forum for
the thrust-and-parry of scientific discourse. Workshops also provide
an opportunity for representatives of a research community to
coordinate efforts and establish collective plans of action.

 To ensure a sufficiently small group for effective interaction,
workshop attendance is controlled with prospective attendees
submitting a short position paper outlining their opinions on an
aspect of the workshop topic. Participants are chosen based on the
relevance of their position paper to the workshop theme.

 Workshop presentations are at the discretion of the workshop
organizers but all attendees are expected to join in the debate with
ample time allotted for general discussion.  After the workshop, the
organizer(s) will be responsible for reporting to the OOP community
via an article in the Proceedings Addendum.

 Papers for the workshops are due by July 30, 1993 and invitations
will be issued on or before August 20, 1993.  The submission addresses
and requirements depend on the workshop; see information at the end of
each workshop description.

 Workshop participants must register for the conference (at least for
one day) and they are encourage to preregister as soon as possible.
This year, conference identification badges will reflect workshop
registration similar to the conference and tutorial registration.
Only those with valid workshop registration will be admitted to
workshop sessions and the workshop reception.

Security For Object-Oriented Systems

This is a workshop on integrating object-oriented technology and
security technology.  The workshop will address two aspects.  First
one will be on incorporating security into object-oriented systems to
produce secure object-oriented systems.  The second aspect will be on
the use of object-oriented design and modeling techniques for
designing secure applications.  The participants of this workshop will
include members of the security community, object-oriented community,
vendors of secure systems, object-oriented systems, and CASE products,
members of the DoD and other Government agencies, researchers and
practitioners of secure systems, object-oriented systems, and CASE
tools.

 Issues to be Discussed
 Mandatory Security:
	For many C4I applications, it is important to provide
	mandatory security.  Consequently, multilevel secure object-oriented
	systems (MLS/OOSs) are needed in order to ensure that users cleared
	to different security levels access and share a database with data
	at different security levels in such a way that they obtain only the
	data classified at or below their level.

 Discretionary Security:
	The workshop will also discuss  discretionary security
	in object-oriented systems.  With discretionary security,
	users are granted access to the objects based on their identification.

 Object-Oriented Approach to Designing Secure Database Applications:
	Object-oriented technology is also being applied to design secure
	applications.  Object-oriented modeling and analysis techniques are
	showing much promise for designing secure applications.

 Requirements for Participation

Position papers between 3- 5 pages on relating security and
object-oriented systems should be submitted to Dr. Bhavani
Thuraisingham by July 30, 1993.  Papers will be reviewed by the
worshop organizers and acceptance/rejection will be based on relevance
to the workshop and the quality of the paper.  Authors will be
notified of the status by August 20, 1993.  The final version will be
due by August 31, 1993.  The accepted papers will be published in the
Proceedings and distributed at the workshop.  Papers will be selected
from this list to be presented at the workshop.  In addition to
presentations, the workshop will also include discussion sessions.
The final minutes of the workshop will be published in the addendum to
the Proceedings of the OOPSLA Conference.

Advanced Techniques for Understanding, Profiling, and Debugging OO Systems

As object-oriented systems become larger and more complex, it becomes
increasingly important to leverage audio and visual techniques in tools
for program understanding, debugging, and tuning.  When profiling a
given OO system, visual techniques become valuable, even indispensable,
when determining clusters of instances or classes that appear to
consume the most processing power. The majority of the relationships
between object instances are naturally expressed in a visual fashion.
Therefore, it seems logical to use visual techniques for monitoring and
debugging OO systems. Sound is also quite useful since it can have a
wider information bandwidth than text and, at the very least, it can
get someone's attention. Other techniques, including virtual reality
or sensory inputs other than visual or audio, also have potential.

 This workshop will bring together people that have developed advanced
techniques other than textual to enhance the understanding of an OO
system, or to improve its execution or correctness.  This might include
displaying networks of object instances, or maybe customized
representations of objects that are normally difficult to trace as they
are manipulated during the execution of the system.  Discussions should
be started to gain ideas about how to extend existing object browsers
and debuggers to equip them with more powerful visualization
techniques.  The different techniques will be presented to the other
attendees and their individual applicability, strengths, and limitations
will be discussed.

 Requirements for attendance

 All participants should submit a short (2 page) position papers to the
workshop organizers.  The paper should briefly describe your specific
techniques and how they enhance the understanding of OO systems or
contribute in profiling or debugging them.  Papers must be submitted by
July 30, 1993.  Participants will be selected and notified August 15,
1993.  Position papers MUST be submitted by email, in ASCII.  It is highly
recommended that position papers be accompanied by relevant paper references.

Utilization of Object-Oriented Technology in Information Systems:
	If not now, when?

Given the current climate of declining federal budgets, it is necessary
to see the cost/benefit associated with utilizing OOT.  Many Information System
managers and developers have the perception that OOT is not mature enough
for mainstream use (i.e., Fortune 500 Enterprises, large scale government
acquisitions/procurements, etc.) and are therefore unwilling to take the risks
associated with implementing new technologies. This belief is easily
supported when reviewing the number of systems developed using OOT vs.
more traditional technologies.  It has also been observed that relational
technologies have taken at least 15 years to mature.

 Goals of the Workshop:

 goals of this workshop are to address the following issues:


- Is OOT mature enough for Information Systems developments now?
- What is needed for OOT to gain wider acceptance?
- Is there a process to support the inclusion of OOT Information
  Systems development?
- Are there measurable benefits resulting from the use of OOT in
  Information Systems developments that might offset the perceived risks?
- What case studies of OOT implementations represent success stories
  for others to follow?

 Focus of the Workshop:

 The focus of this workshop is to provide a forum for software professionals
and government officials to discuss how Object-Oriented Technology (OOT)
can be applied to Information Systems development.  This forum will assess the
current state of the art of OOT within the Government and the private
sector.  The focus areas to be addressed include but are not limited to:
Strategic Planning, Business Process Reengineering, Requirements Analysis,
Software and Database Design, Software and Database Implementation, Test
and Evaluation, and Reuse and Maintenance.  The result of the workshop will
be an assessment of the  current state of the art of OOT as it relates to
Mainstream Information Systems in terms of the strengths, weaknesses, and
recommendations to turn weaknesses into strengths.

 The intended audience for this forum are those individuals involved in
acquisitions, procurements, and development of Information Systems
including government personnel, contractors, and consultants.  Interested
parties must submit a white paper of 2-5 pages on any of the previously

asynchronous events; Modeling different types of constraints, such as:

classification; Lessons learned from the application of OO methods in the
analysis and design of real-time systems

Specification of Behavioral Semantics In OO Information Modeling

To understand an enterprise, make its components reusable  and  semantically
interoperable, precise specifications of behavioral  semantics  are essential.
Current specifications usually emphasize only signatures, with semantics
described informally and incompletely. Further, as objects do not exist in
isolation, modeling  an  enterprise  involves modeling  the collective behavior
of objects that make up the enterprise. In particular, modelers are confronted
with the dual  problems of refining a required functionality using the
collective behavior of  partially-specified (or yet to be identified)  objects
(decomposition), and reusing the collective behaviors of fully-specified
objects
to achieve a desired functionality (aggregation).

 Focus: to explore  behavioral  modeling  concepts, especially modeling the
collective behavior of objects (using declarative constructs), and behavioral
abstraction  and  refinement approaches for aggregation and decomposition. The
workshop IS NOT about comparing  modeling methodologies; neither is it an
opinion forum. Some topics of particular interest include formal specification
of behavioral semantics (using notations like Z), and standardization of
specifications of reusable information technology components.

  Goals:
 A cross-fertilization  of formal  and heuristic/informal  specification
approaches, and an outline of open practical and theoretical questions  that
would  advance the state of the art and the practice.

 Requirements for attendance:
 A 3-4 page position paper (preferably by email)
outlining  behavioral specification approaches and experiences using  specific
approaches to address the aforementioned  problems must be submitted before

Next Generation OO Languages: Extending the Paradigm

The purpose of this workshop is to explore extensions to the object-
oriented paradigm that make it more robust or incorporate other paradigms.
Extensions have been explored in existing languages or have been demonstrated
in experimental languages.  The development of object-oriented languages
continues, object-oriented COBOL is a significant example.  Hopefully the
information exchanged in this workshop will influence the design of the next
generation of object-oriented languages.

Goals of the Workshop

 This workshop is a continuation, in part, of the workshop of the
OOPSLA'92 workshop entitled "Object-Oriented Programming Languages: The Next
Generation."  The format will differ.  This workshop will be organized into
discussion groups and will spend less time on presentations to the entire group.
Participants will be asked to identify topics they would like to discuss in
a group.  The number of discussion groups, and thus the number of topics will
depend upon the number of participants.

Goals of the workshop

The workshop aims at advancing the state of the art in such areas as:

 -  The engineering activities within the OO analysis and design process.

 -  Product and process metrics that foster the assessment of quality,
   reliability, productivity, and cost throughout the product lifecycle.

 -  Measurement, estimation, and management of the OO development process.


Focus of the workshop

This workshop seeks to address the following issues:

 -  Estimating the effort required for a project with respect to OO analysis,
   design, implementation, test, and maintenance.

 -  Objectively tracking progress of an OO development activity.

 -  The impact of OO CASE tools on effort estimation and development process.

 -  The dependency relationships between potential OO metrics and the
     specifics of a particular development method.


Requirements for attendance

This workshop will be of interest to software quality researchers, object-
oriented methodologists, software metricians, practitioners with interests in
reuse, frameworks, design, analysis, and programming; and those interested
in the management of object-oriented development projects.  Potential attendees

 Objects, Iteration And Development Process Standards

At OOPSLA '92, this workshop examined the tension between iterative
design methods and the stability and progress tracking valued by
most development cultures.  This year's workshop will discuss these
issues in the context of established and emerging industry standards
for software development process.  Such standards include the SEI
Capability Maturity Model (CMM), the ISO 9000 series, STD 2167A,
and IPSE2.5.

Goals of the workshop

Participants will discuss how existing methods support the object
paradigm through iteration and other key characteristics.  Evolution
paths will be discussed for the object paradigm and current-generation
development process frameworks to improve their ability to meet each
others' needs.

Focus and issues

We will focus on two or three established process standards that reflect
material submitted in position papers. Participants will draw on each
others' experience to develop consensus on the suitability of those
standards to object-oriented development.

Requirements for attendance

Prospective participants must submit short (1-3 page) position papers
to the workshop organizers by July 30, 1993.  Participants will be
chosen on the basis of the suitability of these papers.  Participants

 Supporting the Evolution of Class Definitions

As object-oriented programming has become more pervasive in the
development of large software systems it has become clear that we must
be able to support compatible changes to class definitions and
implementations without having to rebuild the entire system.  Without
this ability it will be impossible to build real systems that use shared
libraries or on-demand dynamic loading.  Further, without this ability
there are significant costs in programmer productivity because of long
turnaround time on compilations, and in lowered quality because system
designers choose to work around problems in the kernel of systems rather
than impose the cost of recmpilation on clients.

As OOP has moved out into the real world, and has been adopted in
large scale systems (including most of the next generation of
operating systems and platform software), these issues have come to
the fore as a challenge to OO languages. Without solutions, the
benefits of software reuse will remain ungained, and in the longer term the
commitment to OOP itself will be questioned.

Focus and List of Issues

This workshop will focus on the question of how we design
object-oriented languages and their runtime systems to support making
compatible changes to class definitions.  This includes the examination
of already existing languages and how we can support changes to class
definitions within the the constraints of those languages.

Topics and issues which will be relevant include :

 - Evolvable classes and types
 - "Shrink-wrapped" objects
 - Application Binary Interfaces
 - Shared libraries and dynamic linking
 - Versioning and narrowing

a diversity of viewpoints relevent to the workshop focus.
(Three of these presentations will be scheduled for 45 minutes duration,
and five for 20 minutes.) In addition to the presentations, there will be
substantial time for discussion. Deadline for submission is July 30, 1993 and

PATTERNS: Building Blocks for Object-Oriented Architectures

This workshop will build on the successful Architecture Handbook and Patterns
workshops held at previous OOPSLA conferences.

The goal of this workshop is to identify and describe practical patterns
for object-oriented development.

A pattern is a building block.  It consists of a small number of
interconnected classes and objects; it's a grouping that one can see again
and again.  Patterns can provide an overall framework, a useful structuring
or a pervasive style.

When someone describes a pattern, one often uses a real-world analogy to
explain it---and remember it.  Developers use patterns to communicate expertise
and accelerate object-oriented development.

Participants for this workshop should have actual experience in building
object-oriented systems.  Participants should also want to improve their
practice through a deeper technical appreciation of patterns.

In the workshop, participants will further develop and extend the notion of
patterns for object-oriented development.  Beginning from the
material written beforehand by attendees, participants  will work mostly in
small groups, doing a lot of writing and discussing, and using accelerated
learning techniques such as brainstorming and guided visualization to speed
the participants along. By the end of the workshop, the participants will
produce an
OOPSLA'93 Pattern Book, containing these sections:

- Definitions
- Standard Format
- Patterns (15-20 examples)
- Observations
- Recommendations


Potential participants should prepare and submit the following:

- A pattern description
                Each potential participant must find a pattern from
                their experience and describe it in a pattern template provided
                by the organizers.

                Optionally, potential participants may submit a paper
                on patterns, their use in other fields, and their
                application in software development.

- A biographical sketch (200-250 words)


Potential participants should contact the organizers for the pattern
template, some examples, and supporting materials.

The deadline for position papers is July 30, 1993.  Authors will be
notified of acceptance by August 20, 1993.  Copies of position papers will be

 Memory Management and Garbage Collection

Introduction and motivation:
Memory management and garbage collection are an
intrinsic aspect of all object oriented systems, so the technology for
providing them is of direct impact and relevance. The community is making
interesting progress on memory management issues all the time. This workshop
follows in the tradition of similar previous workshops help at OOPSLA '90 and
'91 and the International Workshop on Memory Management held in France in
1992.

Goals:
We will offer a forum for presentation and discussion of recent work,
current developments, and the most promising directions for the future. The
workshop is intended for researchers and implementers active in the field.

Focus and issues:
Techniques for memory management and garbage collection in
object-oriented systems, including support in programming languages and
implementations, in persistent object stores and object-oriented databases, in
real-time systems, and in distributed systems. Especially welcome are reports
on performance measurement and comparisons; i.e., we would like quantitative
evaluation to be one of the emergent themes of the workshop (but not to the
exclusion of new ideas not yet reduced to implementation and measurement).

Requirements for attendance:
Attendance will be by invitation only. Interested
parties should submit a 2 to 5 page position paper and indicate whether they
desire to make a presentation, and if so, whether they prefer to make a short
(10 minute) or long (20 minute) presentation. We will make final versions of
positions papers of attendees available to the other attendees and publicly on
the Internet. Attendance will be limited to 30 to 40 attendees and we reserve
the right to limit the number of authors attending in conjunction with each

 Efficient Implementation of Concurrent Object-Oriented Languages

Concurrent object oriented approaches have many advantages for
programming parallel systems.  However, a major impediment to its
widespread acceptance for parallel programming is the perception that
implementations of concurrent object-oriented languages are
inefficient (particularly compared to Fortran).

The purpose of the workshop is to examine the efficiency of existing
concurrent object-oriented language implementations, discuss
techniques for improving the efficiency of such implementations, and
identify the challenges in reaching parity in efficiency.  An
important goal of the workshop is to facilitate communication amongst
researchers working in distinct communities, including applications
and implementations.

The workshop will focus on all aspects of efficient implementation of
concurrent object-oriented programs.  An incomplete list of these
topics include:

 - Compilation techniques (static analysis and optimization)
 - Supporting data parallel computations
 - Run time issues (load balancing, scheduling, and message
 driven execution)
 - Efficiency problems observed in Practice


Participants who wish to make a presentation are required to submit a
short position paper (2-5 pages).  The organizers will select
from the submissions based on their relevance to the workshop focus,
technical quality, and time available. Electronic mail submissions (to
oopsla-concobjs@cs.uiuc.edu) are enouraged. Other participants must
also submit a position statement (1 page) and will be selected based
on the space available.  Submission deadline is July 30,1993 and authors of

Testing Object-Oriented Software

The testing activity in object-oriented software development has not received
as much
attention as other activities in the development process.  Many issues have
been raised,
but few have been completely or satisfactorily addressed.  For example, how do
polymorphism and dynamic binding affect the selection and execution of test
cases?
How should test plans be structured to accommodate an iterative incremental
process
model?  The purpose of this workshop is to provide a forum for discussion of
these and
other issues related to testing object-oriented software systems, the
presentation of status
reports from research projects and experience reports on test plans developed
for actual
systems, and the development of agendas for research and development
activities related
to testing issues.

The workshop will begin with selected position papers being presented.  The
papers
will be selected to provide a balance between research and practical
experience.
Based on the interests represented in the position papers, the organizing
committee
will form working groups.  Each group will address a set of related issues.
The report of the group will focus on the status of knowledge, research, and
practice in their particular area.  Each group will report to the workshop in
the
afternoon with a synopsis of their discussions and a suggested list of research
and development activities for that area.  The compendium of these reports
and the
submitted position papers will be the primary output of the workshop.  A
secondary result
will be the establishment of a community of interested individuals.

Workshop Participation:  Persons wishing to participate in the workshop
should
submit a short position paper to the organizing committee via the contact
person.
The paper should address a specific aspect of the testing process or
outline a specific testing algorithm.  Two or three of the papers will be
selected
for presentation at the beginning of the workshop.  All papers will be
considered
for publication. Submitted papers must be received before July 30, 1993, and
notification
of acceptance or rejection will be mailed on or before August 20, 1993.

 Design Trade-offs in Re-engineering Large Legacy Systems

Large complex real-time legacy systems are frequently re-engineered
by design teams using object-oriented analysis and design
methodologies.  Design trade-offs are often necessitated by
performance requirements, limited market-windows, deployment costs
and long-term maintenance issues. These systems cannot be
re-engineered overnight, but require transition strategies where old
and new components must coexist and interact.

Participants will exchange experiences (both successes and failures)
and develop a consensus on the activities required to bridge the
transition between current and re-engineered systems (chaos to order).
Consensus will be achieved through the collaborative efforts of all
participants.  Workshop activities will be moderated by an experienced
group facilitator using the techniques employed at the successful
OOPSLA'92 workshop "Team Approaches to Object-Oriented Design".

Position papers should indicate participants' experience with
object-oriented design techniques, the size of their current system
(design/code bulk and team size), their design tools, and design
processes.  To begin the consensus building process, participants are
also expected to address the following questions in their position paper:


 - Where are you going?   How would you personally
characterize successful re-engineering?
 - Where have you been?   What design-tradeoffs have been
effective or ineffective in your organization?
 - How will you get there?   What steps have you already
identified  in order to begin re-engineering your system?


Participants will be selected on the basis of position papers
(500-1,500 words/2-5 pages) submitted by email.  Please include
a brief biography at the end of your position paper.
Deadline for submission is July 30, 1993, and acceptance or rejection will be
mailed on or before August 20, 1993.

 Object and Data Integration in Heterogeneous Database Environments

The need to integrate run-time objects with data residing in object oriented

overcome.   This workshop will gather individuals participating in such
systems
development/integration for examination of relevant issues.  The goal of the
workshop is
to identify the dominant technical issues that should be addressed by vendors
and
standards for such systems integration.

Topics posing integration challenges included:   Mapping and storing
objects in non-
object databases and object databases simultaneously.  Retaining object
integrity within
distributed, and heterogeneous databases.  Object oriented language interfaces
for object,
relational and other databases.  Object querying in heterogeneous databases.
Distributed
transaction management for object based heterogeneous environments.
Encapsulating
legacy systems for integration with object based systems.

Interested parties must have participated (or are currently participating)
in the
development of a system employing related topics.   Consideration will be made
to papers
indicating future challenges envisioned.  Participants are expected to
contribute to
discussion on the challenges and solutions relevant to the design of such
systems.
Participation will be by invitation only and is based on the acceptance of a
relevant
position paper.

Papers should be no more than 4 pages in length. Acceptance will be based
on the
relevance of the material to workshop objectives and on architectural
integrity of the
persistency techniques and tools implemented.

Potential participants are required to mail 5 copies of a position paper by
July 30, 1993, and acceptance or rejection notices will be mailed on or before
August 20, 1993.

 Object-Oriented Reflection And Metalevel Architectures

A programming language with an object-oriented metalevel architecture is
one in which programs are themselves constructed out of first-class objects.
A reflective object-oriented language allows a running program to look at or
change the objects out of which it is built.  Reflection can extend the reach
of a
programming system inward into the definition of the language itself,
downward into its implementation, and outward into realms currently
considered the provinces of operating systems, programming environments
and database systems.Object-oriented reflective architectures can allow issues
that have
heretofore been dealt with in ad hoc, extra-linguistic fashions,
such as debugging and tracing, distributed computation, concurrency,
and persistence to be dealt with in a consistent manner.

This workshop will be the fourth in a series, and follows workshops that
were held at ECOOP/OOPSLA '90 in Ottawa, OOPSLA '91 in Phoenix, and ECOOP '92
in Utrecht.  The workshop will be organized
into several sessions, each of which will be comprised of
presentations and moderated discussions.  Possible topics include:

 - Reflective theory, definitions and terminology
 - Metalevel architectures for reflective languages and systems
 - The efficient implementation of reflective facilities
 - Reflection in concurrent and distributed systems
 - How reflection can bridge the gap between traditional languages
                and system-wide extralinguistic object models


Potential participants will be asked to submit a position paper of
two or more pages.  These papers may be extended abstracts of original
work in progress, or position statements that outline the author's
interest in or opinions on one or more issues in the area.  We intend
to make copies of all the accepted position papers
available to all the participants prior to the workshop.  Submission deadline
is July 30, 1993, and notification of acceptance or rejection will be mailed
on or before August 20, 1993.  Electronic submissions are encouraged.

More and more researchers and developers are recognizing the potential of
visual programming to make OOP easier and less error-prone.   The
goals of this workshop are to bring together a variety of insights and
experiences in visual OOP by sharing recent and emerging work; discussing
problems and solutions; and participating in an active exchange of ideas.

Sample topics include (but are not limited to):

 - Programming Language Issues for Visual OOPs (approaches to scope,
          inheritance, efficiency, ...)
 - Innovation and Non-Traditional Approaches to OOP via
          Visual Techniques (constraints, declarative approaches, ...)
 - Visual Environments for Textual OOPs
 - Lessons Learned in the Trenches: Experience Papers on Visual OOP


Attendees must have participated in in-depth research or development work
involving a visual programming language or visual programming environment
related to OOP.  Participation in the workshop will be by invitation only
and is based on the acceptance of an extended abstract and a brief
(1-2 pages) biographical sketch summarizing current activities,
related publications, current position, and affiliation.

A book containing full versions of some of the papers (refereed) is planned.


Potential participants are required to submit 5 copies of an extended
abstract
and biographical sketch  to the contact person by July 30, 1993.  Acceptance
or rejection notices will be issued on or before August 20, 1993.

 The Role of a Corporate Object Technology Center

Corporations that wish to adopt OOT on a large scale face a complex set
of technical, cultural, organizational, management and policy issues.
To facilitate this adoption, a number of organizations have set up a
corporate "object technology center." This workshop will provide the
first forum for members of such corporate groups to discuss and exchange
information on these issues.

Goals:
A specific goal of the workshop is to identify the kinds of
collaboration and information exchange that could benefit all
participants. For example, all organizations adopting OOT have
to solve issues relative to testing OO systems. Collaboration
in the development of testing algorithms and
tools could facilitate the effective adoption of OOT for all involved.
Participants will be asked to identify the areas of most pressing need
to their organization. An attempt will be made to develop a prioritized
agenda and workplan for solving these issues.


Focus and list of issues:
We list several issues below, to give potential participants an
indication of the focus of the workshop.

 - How should a corporate object center be structured, and what
activities should it undertake to most effectively help an organization
in the transition to OOT? What is the relative benefit of these
activities. For example, does the creation of design handbooks have a
higher leverage than the evaluation of tools and environments?

 - How to change the culture and literacy of a development group enough
to open the group to a move to OOT? For example, how do help developers
move from a code centered approach to a design centered approach?

 - How to change existing corporate processes, measurements,
funding policies, etc. to allow OOT to function effectively? What is the
minimum set of changes required? Is there an OOT maturity model and can
we identify the kinds of changes needed to move from one level to the
next. What is the minimum time an organization must remain on one level
before it can safely move to the next?

 - How to effectively infuse OO expertise into an organization. How do
we grow OO expertise in-house, and how do we most effectively utilize
outside consulting. Specifically what role should the corporate object
center play in this.


Requirements for attendance:
Participants should be members of a corporate "object center."
Organizations considering the establishment of such a center
may send a person to this workshop on a space available basis.
Participants are required to submit a position paper. Two types of
papers are sought.

 - Papers that summarize corporate object center experiences. These papers
should indicate what has worked and what hasn't. They should also indicate
what the most pressing current needs are for their organization and what
possible areas of collaboration exist.

 - Papers on a specific issue faced by corporate object centers. These
papers will focus on a topic from the above list or a related issue.


Deadline for submission is July 30, 1993 and notification of acceptance or
rejection will be mailed before August 20, 1993.

 Understanding Object-Model Concepts

Minor and major variations in concepts and terms for object-oriented models
abound.  The concepts and terms are maturing to the point that it may now be
possible to resolve differences and come to agreement.  Furthermore, suitable
approaches to formalizing these ideas are beginning to appear, which may help
solidify agreement.

Goals:
In this workshop we wish to address three fundamental issues:

 - What are the core concepts of the object model?
 - How have people defined these concepts?
 - What are suitable approaches to formalizing these concepts?


Core concepts may include, but are not limited to: object, class,
encapsulation,
inheritance, relationships among objects, role, state, object behavior,
messages, interactions among objects, concurrency, persistence, versions,
abstraction, views.  In addition to intuitively understanding core object-model
concepts, we seek to explore approaches to formalizing them.

Focus:
This workshop focuses on model concepts.  In particular, issues concerning
notation and methodology will not be discussed.  Instead, we wish to
provide a forum where members of the object community can compare and evaluate
similar, subtly different, and opposing ideas underlying object-model concepts.

Requirements for Attendance:
Submit a position paper (max 2,000 words) by July 30, 1993, preferably by
e-mail.  Notification of acceptance will be sent by August 20, 1993.
