Don't miss this tutorial on Volume Visualization by Arie Kaufman and
Gregory Nielson...

and why not to participate to the whole CGI '93 event?

Tutorial, Monday June, 21
-------------------------

9:30 - 17:00 Tutorial 1: Volume Visualization Techniques and
Applications Arie E. Kaufman, State University of New York at Stony
Brook (USA), Gregory M. Nielson, Arizona State University (USA)

Volume visualization is emerging in the nineties as a key technology
with a gamut of techniquesfor visualizing three-dimensional sampled,
simulated, and synthetic datasets. This course provides an overview of
the field, the nomenclature, the technology and the techniques with an
emphasis on the algorithms, tools, and the associated applications.
The course covers and compares different approaches in volume
representation, fitting of surfaces to volume data, volume viewing,
volume shading, volume synthesis and applications of volume
visualization. Attendees will become familiar with the technology and
several major applications, understand the available tools and
techniques, and recognize the challenges confronting this emerging
field. They are expected to come out of this course with a broad
knowledge in all major issues of volume visualization.

9:30 - 12:30 Tutorial 2: A Virtual Reality Cookbook
Jean-Francis Balaguer, Enrico Gobbetti,
Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Lausanne

This half day tutorial is aimed at experienced 3D graphics developers
who would like to learn the specific techniques necessary to exploit
the expressivity and power of new 3D input and display devices in
their applications. After giving a brief historical background and
motivations of Virtual Reality, the authors will present hardware
configurations and software techniques for building immersive and
desktop VT applications. In particular, the presentation will cover
the following issues : computing stereo images, filtering input device
data to reduce noise and delay, performing gesture recognition and
building 3D interactive objects.

14:00 - 17:00 Tutorial 3: Numerical Mock-ups and Visual simulation
tools for Architects
Georges Abou-Jaoude, University of Geneva and Swiss Federal Institute of
Technology, Lausanne

What is wrong with the philosophy of usual so called CAD systems used by
architects ?
New approaches into building numerical mock-ups and extracting the
information an architect needs involves object oriented databases
and a structure that allows a multi-media description of the Design
Object. Generating images, animation, and physical models out of
the numerical description of an object implies a different approach
of the design process and the use of visual simulation tools.
Therefore, we will try during this short course to review the typology
of these new tools, and try to understand where they fit in a conceptual
process.

Tutorial, Tuesday June, 22
--------------------------

9:30 - 17:00 Tutorial 4: User Interface Design
Aaron Marcus, Aaron Marcus and Associates (USA)

Graphical user interfaces (GUIs) are crucial for the success of
computer-based products. Presented by a pioneer of computer graphics
and a leader in the field of user interface design, electronic
document design, and knowledge visualization, this tutorial will
give developers, designers, and users valuable insight into key
issues and show how to achieve effective visual communication. The
tutorial will introduce terminology, principles, guidelines, and
heuristics for using information-oriented, systematic graphic design
in user interfaces, especially for the design of icons, control panels
and dialogue boxes, and navigational devices.

9:30 - 17:00 Tutorial 5: Envisioning 3D Structures
Geoff Wyvill, University of Otago, New Zealand
Robert Parslow, Parslow and Associates (UK)

Few people realise how much their thinkink is restricted to two
dimensions. Although graphics systems help one to view 3D structures
they do not inspire designs, hence the profusion of poorly designed
artifacts in only "two and a half dimensions". This course aims to
demonstrate to the participants where their abilities are lacking and
to begin the process of educating them to think in 3D.

18:00 - 19:00 Welcome cocktail
