From: markp@apple.com (Mark D. The lines at the Sega booth were long _and_ continuous. Same for VictorMaXX. Same for 3DO. But Nintendo, which doesn't seem to understand the imperitive of continous innovation (perhaps they haven't realized they have a high- technology company on their hands) was hardly crowded at all, at least in comparison. It seems clear that Sega will emerge a winner, at least _this_ Christmas. Everyone who tried the Sega VR demo (I wasn't among the lucky few) had good things to say about it. And from what I've heard, the displays will be relatively _high_ resolution. At least as good as what is currently commercially available for under $10,000. The video gaming market, outside of VR, seems curiously stagnant. It may be that 8 - 14 year-olds _can_ get enough of kick, punch, shoot. Sega's decision to "rate" their games and the focus on an older age group (18 - 24) which can _afford_ to make an investment in software seems to indicate that the "gaming" market is moving upward, both in terms of age and sophistication. Another Christmas will prove me wrong or right, but it looks as if video gaming is about to go through another of the shakeout cycles it last experienced in '82-'84. I think this means that an enourmous opportunity, in consumer entertainment VR, is now opening. I hope that the participants in sci.vw get to benefit from that. Mark Pesce markp@os.com |)
