         ---------- CALL FOR PAPERS ----------

THE ENGINEERING REALITY OF VIRTUAL REALITY
        ------------------------------------------

			SPIE, Feb 94

Conference Chair: Mark T. Bolas, Fakespace, Inc.; Scott S. Fisher,
Telepresence Research

Conference Committee: Steve T. Bryson, Computer Sciences Corp.; Jim
Humphries, Sterling Software, Inc.; Mike Keeler, Silicon Graphics,
Inc.; Mike McGrath, National Science Foundation; Mike Oberman, OBE
Systems, Henry Sowizral, Boeing Computer Services

As graphics generation and presentation hardware decrease in price,
the power of high-end simulation is beginning to be found in lower
cost virtual and augmented reality systems. In order for these new
"personal simulators" to help virtual and augmented reality fulfill
their promise, a number of often disparate technologies and
disciplines must be tailored and integrated for specific visualization
applications. This conference serves as a forum where advances and
practical advice toward this end can be presented and discussed.

Papers with a systems and application-specific point of view that
discuss findings or advances in any of the following areas are
solicited:

* graphics generation hardware and software
* interface devices and paradigms
* display and optics configurations and technologies
* tracking and sensing technologies
* communication and networking hardware and software
* novel simulation systems and devices
* ergonomics and human factors.

Applicants will be notified of acceptance by October 21, 1993 and will
be sent further instructions for preparation of both the camera-ready
abstract for the final program and the full manuscript for the
proceedings.

YOUR ABSTRACT SHOULD INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:

1. Title of Abstract/Paper

2. Authors' Listing (list principal author first)

Full names and affiliations as they will appear in the program.

3. Correspondence for EACH author

List the authors' complete mailing addresses, telephone and telefax
numbers, and e-mail address.

4. Submit to: (Conference Title) (Conference Chair)

Indicate to which conference within the symposium the abstract is
intended.

5. Abstract text: 500 words.

6. Brief biography: 50 to 100 words (principal author only)

PUBLICATION: PROCEEDINGS/JOURNAL

These meetings will result in published Proceedings that can be
ordered through the Advance Program. Manuscripts are required of all
accepted applicants and must be submitted in English by January 10,
1994. Copyright to the manuscript is expected to be released for
publication in the conference Proceedings. Publication in the
proceedings does not preclude submission for publication review to the
IS&T/SPIE Journal of Electronic Imaging.

NEW PUBLISHING POLICY

We want to inform you of a new IS&T/SPIE policy regarding the
conference proceedings publication scheduled. The EI94 proceedings
will be available approximately eight weeks after the conclusion of
the meeting. To make this possible, submission of manuscripts by the
announced due date becomes especially important. Previously, for some
conferences, manuscripts were accepted in the weeks following the
meeting. To meet a more timely publication this will no longer be
possible. Manuscripts must be received no later than the end of the
conference week. The objective of this change is to better serve the
conference participants and the technical community at large. Your
cooperation supporting this objective will be appreciated by all.

PAPER REVIEW

Commercial papers, descriptions of papers with no research content,
and papers where supporting data or a technical description cannot
be given for proprietary reasons will not be accepted for presentation
in this symposium. To assure a high quality conference, all abstracts
and Proceedings papers will be reviewed by the Conference Chairs for
technical merit and content.

ORAL PRESENTATION

Each author will be allowed 20 minutes plus a five minute discussion
period. Invited papers may be given longer presentation times. The
following media equipment will be provided free of charge: 35mm
carousel slide projectors, overhead projectors, electric pointers, and
video equipment (please give at least two weeks advance notice).
Additional equipment may be arranged at the speaker's expense.

AUTHOR BENEFITS

An author or co-author who attends the conference will be accorded a
reduced-rate registration fee, a copy of the Proceedings in which
her/his paper appears, and other special benefits.

ABSTRACT DUE DATE: July 12, 1993
Camera-Ready Abstract Due Date: November 15, 1993
Manuscript Due Date: January 10, 1994

Note: Late abstract submissions may be considered, subject to program
time availability and Chair's approval.
