King Southwestern University (Georgetown, Texas) & Human Interface Technology Laboratory (Seattle, Washington) Abstract: Researchers in the field of HCI have already begun to build experimental systems which react to facial nonverbal behavior (i.e., facial expressions, gaze, and pupil size). However, much of this work has suffered because the theoretical groundwork has yet to be constructed. I will first introduce a study which I did to investigate the exhibition of facial expressions within HCI. This is the first experiment ever to show that humans actually do make facial expressions when interacting with computers, and the number of expressions is quantified across a variety of computer-based tasks (i.e., graphical manipulation, graphical creation, text manipulation, gaming, and a baseline) and user experience levels (i.e., novice, intermediate, expert). I will also review other psychological and HCI literature relevant to the use of gaze and pupil size in HCI. Finally, I will describe the beginning of a theoretical model which uses all three of these input channels together, thereby reducing ambiguity. This model can be used to conduct "Wizard of Oz" studies and build adaptive user interfaces using AI techniques. Biography: Mr. King completed a Bachelor of Arts in Experimental Psychology with Honors and a Bachelor of Arts in Computer Science with Honors at Southwestern University. He will be entering the doctoral program in cognitive psychology at the University of Washington in the fall; he will also begin his duties as research assistant to Dr. Thomas A. Furness at HITL. Mr. King has previously spent two summers at HITL as first an intern and then as a laboratory associate. Beyond facial non- verbal behavior, Mr. King's research interests include 3D sound in HCI, psychological issues in multi-user virtual environments, and adaptive user interfaces.
