                          LOCAL ATTRACTIONS
                       ************************

Ankara, the capital city of Turkey, lies in the center of Anatolia. Its history
goes back to the Bronze Age, Hittite civilization. After the control of various
civilizations including Phrygians, Lydians, Persians, Galatians, Romans,
Byzantines, Seljuks, and Ottomans, finally in 1923 it was declared as the
capital of the new Turkish Republic. Today, besides the old town with its
citadel, Ankara is a modern city representing the Turkish Republic.

Ankara has assorted places of interest. Places of historical importance are the
Ankara Citadel, the Temple of Augustus, the Roman Baths, and the Column of
Julian. There are important museums with precious historical and cultural
pieces: The Museum of Anatolian Civilizations, the Ethnographical Museum, the
Painting and Sculpture Museum, the Museum of the Republic, and Ataturk's
Mausoleum.

To the south of Ankara is Lake Golbasi, a popular place to visit for the
attractive scenery, and the fine restaurants on the lakeside. Other attractive
natural sites, especially for those who enjoy mountain air, are the Beynam
Forest and Elmadag Mountain.

                          SOCIAL ACTIVITIES
                       ***********************

There will be a welcome cocktail and a reception in Bilkent University. Also
there will be excursions to the local historical and natural sites in and
around Ankara. The tours are listed below. Please indicate, in the registration
form, the tour you wish to take.

            tumulus of King Midas.

[Tour C] Tour to Hattusas: This is a daily tour. It costs $75 per person
(including the lunch). Hattusas was the capital of the Hittite
empire and is famous for its ancient relief carvings.

person including full pension accommodation in Hotel Dedeman
(a five star international hotel), travel expenses, guide services,
and entrance fees to historical sites. Cappadocia is famous for
its astonishing natural scenery and historical places such as
early Christian churches and underground cities.
