Many of the application areas treated since our first conference in 1990 involve massive scientific data bases, usually under the condition of sensor acquisition or simulation output. The motivation for a separate conference/focus on this field comes from the novelty of the size of the source data sets, and the need for construing new graphic methods for perceiving relations, distributions, exceptions, etc. In the past several decades there has been some isolated work on the conditions required for extracting information from data in support of human decision makers involved in the operation of large, complex systems. Bertin indicated some promising directions in his landmark work on the Semiology of Graphics. Some of Inselberg's work addresses this issue. It is problematic whether Tufte, Cleveland, and others who address the issues of direct graphic quantitative perception have created a complete foundation for interactive, real time decision support. In some military operations studies, this has been characterized as decision under risk. In visualization, the methods are characterized as multidimensional visualization, or mDv, and have been the subject of two workshops . This year marks a departure from the previous mDv workshops in that the emphasis is even more squarely on the strategies of visual metaphor building that are effective for the human operator "under risk." This is less about the mathematics of strategy in game-theoretic terms, or linear optimizations in n-space, than it is about representation of roughly defined, incompletely sampled operational spaces, and the system of interaction with that representation by an operator who has incomplete information and inadequate time to fully define and analyze a survival or coping strategy. Topics Adaptive Representation Mediated (AI/neural net) vs. unmediated display Perceptual/cognitive issues in representation Metrics of complexity for representation and response Visual semiology of task representation Modeling the topology of decision making for interaction design Decision and representation matching Participation Participation is invited based on original research in any field germane to the above topics. This is a workshop, so principal investigators only are invited to submit. Participation will be limited to 20. Please submit a 5000 word or less description of your problem definition, strategy, and evaluation of results so far.
