As I informed Alan privately, this may not work out totally badly,
although the precedent is not well set.  Toni Emerson, who will take
over the newsgroup gradually, is an extremely talented, witty person
and a fab librarian to boot.  s.v-w may actually improve as a source
of reliable information.  For myself, s.v-w.apps, once we have the
archiving situation worked out, will be my thing and we'll try to turn
it into the model of a multi-moderator, rolling ejournal type of
thing.  It's an experiment, as is the net generally.

I prefer to be out of the jaws of the University.  While individuals
at the U are great -- Sandy Moy, the main computer adminstrator, has
been a constant source of support and encouragement -- there is always
an undercurrent of danger in a highly contested terrain, fiefdoms and
baronies and such.  Of course, we're moving to another university
host, the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, but the Swedes
are crazy enough to enjoy the unpredictability of a newsgroup.  (Their
Seattle descendants have grown too fat and bland.)

So, do not lament.  I do think the local administration at the UW
should hear about this and learn to butt out, but that's up to them.
I appreciate what the HIT Lab allowed us to do for three years, until
the pressure for control became irresistible.  Now it's on to other
things.

Alan's offer to use the MIT Media Lab computer will be a welcome
backup if the Swedish machine should hiccup.  Javisst!
