I am interested in reorienting my career away from bench science towards the development of interactive environments for science education and exploration. Briefly, I have a Ph.D. in cell biology with research experience involving several disciplines including toxicology, pharmacology, and molecular biology. One common thread through the different projects has been the use of tools such as the electron microscope, SEM and freeze fracture to visualize what may be happening within cells. To my everlasting regret, there has never been a holographic microscope. However, I envision that VR coupled with the properties of self-similiarities of living systems as generated in fractals can be used to create realistic illusions occuring within the body. The bottom line is I want to create "Fantastic Voyages" in order to reintroduce curiosity and excitement to students learning science. One must begin to integrate the new paradigms developing in science to create holistic views of scientific pursuit. My questions are where to begin? Are there specific programs (fellowships/internships) designed to train people in the area? Are there already creative groups interested in designing educational tools for science?
