Subject: TECH: 3D tracker reliability?

We are becoming involved in a large collaborative project for
information-enhanced surgery, and intend to include a 3D interface
with strong VR components.

Borrowing a 3D locator from the VR lab upstairs, we have become very
impressed with its failure rate; up there and down here, lots of down
time on all devices.

Frequent failure is _not_ acceptable in a medical application.

I would be very grateful for comments by experienced users as to what
makers do provide robust devices; either post or e-mail replies would
be fine.  (I can summarise for the net, if asked.)

Also, we are interested in much more precision and accuracy than are
needed in applications which focus on hand gestures.  (Precision is
how many decimal places the position is given to; accuracy is the size
of the error with which it is given, and can vary over the region of
movement.)  Any comments on these qualities would be very welcome.
