I have used a Virtuality game system for 5 minutes at a stretch with no ill effects...nor hint of eye-strain. Disorientation, certainly...that goes hand in hand with a virtual environment. But not actual strain on the rectus muscles. Perhaps the story would be different after a solid half hour or hour, but 5 minutes (as mentioned in the letter you were quoting) does not seem "far too long" to be using a HMD. !!!!!
