If the individual is entering the VW as a form of escapism, doesn't it logically follow that this individual therefore has a sence of purpose: to get away from reality? Personally, I feel that people are actually gaining something by entering a VW. Where else do you have the power to fly like a bird, or swim without SCUBA gear, or even float in orbit without a space suit? (Of course, these are only skimming the surface of VR, but you see my point.) VR gives people a chance to live out their dreams. (Enter Ricardo Montalban here ;-) If I was offered this chance, where do you think I'd go for a lot of my time?
