The theme of this year's conference is New Pathways to Knowledge The keynote speaker will be Ken King, former president of EDUCOM and current president of Ken King & Associates. His topic is "Pathways to Knowledge in the 21st Century - New Paradigms for Teaching and Learning." Other featured speakers include - Dr. Norman Coombs, Professor of History at Rochester Institute of Technology and Chair of EASI (Equal Access to Software and Information, a project of EDUCOM). - Keith Sams, Senior Technical Support Representative, IBM Corporation. Topic: "Traveling the Insight Freeway." - Eve Ruff, Head of Library Services, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. The visual link between observer and data permits a highly interactive exploration of data from a variety of sources and applications. The objective of this tutorial is to provide a working knowledge of visualization concepts, and hands-on experience using state-of- the-art visualization software. Examples drawn from applications of general interest, such as natural resource management, will be used to illustrate how data from multiple sources can be combined to create a visualization. Although some experience with computing is recommended, NO PRIOR KNOWLEDGE OF UNIX OR PROGRAMMING IS ASSUMED. *** Exploring Internet Highways and Byways Instructors: Barry Brown, Science Librarian, Mansfield Library Vicki Pengelly, Information Systems Specialist, Computing and Information Services Time: 1:00-4:00 p.m. Limit: 20 participants Cost: $35.00/person The increasingly popular Internet, the world's largest computer network, provides access to a mind-boggling array of information. Through the use of network technology, participants will "travel" to various locations on the Internet without leaving the comfort of the lab. Some of the topics to be explored include: * an overview of the resources * library catalogs and databases * publicly accessible files * information servers, such as Gopher and WAIS This tutorial is suitable for those who have never used the Internet but also for those who have some knowledge and want to increase their skills. This tutorial provides guest accounts and emphasizes hands-on exercises. *** Authorware Professional Instructor: Jim Ereaux, Director of Computing Systems, Salish Kootenai College Time: 1:00-5:00 p.m. Limit: 14 participants Cost: $35.00/person Authorware Professional is a sophisticated solution for producing multimedia programs. Authorware, originally designed for the corporate market, has found increasing support in the education community. Authorware is unique in that programming is accomplished by positioning action-related icons on a procedural timeline. Authorware produces cross-platform programs and runs on both Apple Macintosh and Microsoft Windows. This tutorial introduces multimedia programs with Authorware Professional. Demonstration versions of Authorware (limited to 50 actions) will be used and made available for distribution.
