Topic: Spatial Data Management in Database Systems: The Next Step Dr. Won Kim received B.S. and M.S. degrees in physics from MIT, and Ph.D. degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He joined MCC in 1984 and was Director of the Object-Oriented and Distributed System Laboratory. He was the chief architect of the ORION OODB system. Prior to joining MCC, he was a research staff at IBM Almaden Research Center for four years. He is currently President of Unisql Inc., Austin, Texas. He has co-edited two books: Query processing in database systems (Springer-Verlag), and Object-oriented concepts, databases and applications (Addison-Wesley), and co-authored a book, Introduction to Object-Oriented Databases (MIT Press). He is the ACM-SIGMOD chairman and the chief editor of the ACM Trans. on Database Systems. Hans Schek, ETH, Zurich, Switzerland. Topic: Interoperable Spatial Database Systems Prof. Schek received M.Sc. degree in mathematics and Ph.D. degree (Dr.-Ing) in civil engineering from University of Stuttgart, West Germany, in 1968 and 1972, respectively. He is currently a Computer Science Professor at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zurich, Switzerland, where he is the head of the Database Research Group and responsible for database education. He is also the head of the Institute of Information Systems at ETH. From 1983 to 1988, he was a Computer Science Professor at the Technical University of Darmstardt, West Germany, where he was responsible for database research and education, particularly, for the DASDBS database system. He is a chief editor of the Very Large Data Bases Journal. Michael R. Stonebraker, UCB, California, U.S.A. Topic: The SEQUOIA 2000 Project and its Implications on The Spatial Database Research Prof. Michael R. Stonebraker received his M.S. and Ph.D. from University of Michigan respectively in 1966 and 1971. He is currently a professor in Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences, University of California Berkeley. He is the founder, consultant, and member of board of directors for INGRES Corp. (now the INGRES Products Division of ASK Computer Systems). His well known relational DBMS INGRES and post-relational DBMS POSTGRES greatly influence database research direction. In 1992, he received the first ACM SIGMOD innovation award in recognition of his contribution. His research interests include Data Base Management Systems, Operating Systems, and Expert Systems. He was the Chairman of ACM-SIGMOD from 1980-1983 and the program Chairman of 1992 SIGMOD annual conference and has been a member of SIGMOD Advisory Committee since 1987. TUTORIALS --------- Two tutorials will be integrated into the FEGIS program. Tutorial 1: GIS Query Languages Instructor: Max J. Egenhofer, U. of Maine, U.S.A. An interactive query languages is an essential part of a user interface for geographic databases to allow the user to pose ad-hoc queries. Traditional database query languages, such as SQL or Query-by-Example, have provided insufficient services for the treatment of spatial properties. Deficiencies observed include the requirement to model spatial data in terms of relations, the users' need of a sophisticated mathematical knowledge in order to express queries with spatial conditions, and the lack of representations of query results in forms other than text. This course will provide an overview of the concept of spatial data GIS and how they can be incorporated into a formal syntax. The focus will be on concepts humans have about spatial data and how conventional database query languages, such as SQL, can be extended to spatial query languages incorporating these properties. Participants will learn about the deficiencies of traditional query languages of commercial (relational) databases when they are applied to GIS. Various extensions to standard query languages will be discussed comparing how these extended query languages treat spatial data and how easy they are to use. Examples of issues to be discusses include an object-oriented view of spatial data with complex operations and relationships and the graphical representation of spatial data. Specific emphasis will be given to the user interface and the interaction between user and spatial data displayed in graphical form. Instructor: Biography to be furnished. Tutorial 2: Towards the next generation of GIS systems Instructor: Michael Freeston, European Computer-Industry Research Centre (ECRC) This tutorial will take a broad sweep over the state of the art in database technology and GIS systems, in order to identify the immediate and longer-term challenges in the development of next generation systems. The basic tenet of the presentation is that there will in fact be no distinction in future between GIS systems and 'main-stream' database systems - but that this union will require a radical rethink of the relationships between compiler, database and graphics technologies. The general view expressed will be very positive: that, by convergence and integration of existing - albeit some very new - technologies, we may expect a new generation of GIS/database systems of greatly enhanced functionality within the next ten years. Specific topics addressed will be: * solution of the database impedance mismatch problem: persistent programming languages; * a unified conceptual model for GIS, and its representation; * integration of deductive and object-oriented database models; * visualisation: unified conceptual and visualisation models; direct database support for graphical interfaces; * a unified framework for spatial data: representation, querying, reasoning, visualisation and graphical manipulation; * a unified framework for temporal data: representation, querying, reasoning, versioning, recovery; * integration of spatial, temporal and logical constraints; * knowledge abstraction, knowledge approximation. Tutorial 3: Towards Intelligent Spatial Database Systems Instructor: Jiawei Han, Simon Fraser, Canada An important research direction in the development of advanced spatial database systems is the integration of spatial database technology with knowledge-base and object-oriented database technologies and the construction of sophisticated, intelligent and efficient spatial knowledge-bases. In this tutorial, we briefly introduce the technologies developed in deductive and object-oriented databases and knowledge discovery in databases and explore the integration of spatial database technology with knowledge-base and object-oriented database technologies. We report some on-going research in this direction and propose several interesting research directions on the integration of these technologies. The topics to be discussed including compilation of deductive databases, algebraic simplification of spatial query expressions, intergated evaluation of compiled query expressions with spatial computation methods, knowledge discovery in spatial databases, a multi-resolution spatial data model, browsing spatial databases, and intelligent spatial query answering using deduction rules and knowledge discovery techniques. Instructor: Jiawei Han is an associate professor of Computing Science at Simon Fraser University (Canada). He received his Ph.D. in computer sciences from the University of Wisconsin at Madison in 1985. Prior to joining SFU, he was an assistant professor in Northwestern University from 1986 to 1987. He has conducted research in the areas of deductive databases, knowledge discovery in databases, spatial databases, logic programming, and object-oriented databases with over 50 journal and conference publications. Tutorial 4: Hierarchical Data Structures for Spatial Databases Instructor: Hanan Samet, U. of Maryland, U.S.A. Spatial databases are becoming increasingly important in applications in computer vision, cartography, computer graphics, solid modeling, and robotics. Spatial databases consist of points, lines, rectangles, regions, surfaces, volumes, and other geometric data. The implementation of spatial databases involves many issues including a choice among a number of different representations, as well as the types of queries to be supported, In this tutorial we review some of the most recent representations and the type of operations that they are designed to support. We also briefly point out how to integrate spatial and non-spatial data in conventional database management systems. Many of our examples will be drawn from a family of hierarchical data structures that are based on the principle of divide-and-conquer. The key advantage of these representations is that they provide a way to index into space. In fact, they are little more than multidimensional sorts. They are compact and depending on the nature of the spatial data they save space as well as time and also facilitate operations such as search. A live demonstration will be given of a spatial database management systems that employs these concepts. Instructor: Hanan Samet received the B.S. degree in engineering from UCLA, and the M.S. Degree in operations research and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in computer science from Stanford University. He is a Fellow of the IEEE. In 1989-1991 he served on the ACM Council as the ACM Capital Region Representative. In 1975 he joined the Computer Science Department at the University of Maryland, College Park, where he is now a Professor. He is also a member of the Computer Vision Laboratory of the Center for Automation Research, and has an appointment in the University of Maryland Institute for Advanced Computer Studies. He is the author of the books "Design and Analysis of Spatial Data Structures" and "Applications of Spatial Data Structures: Computer Graphics, Image Processing, and GIS", both published by Addison-Wesley, 1990. He is an Area Editor of the journal "Computer Vision, Graphics, and Image Processing: Image Understanding" and is on the Editorial Board of the "Journal of Visual Languages" and "Pattern Recognition".
