Excerpt from Micorosoft reviewers guide for the next Microsoft Mouse:

Using such tools as a VPL Data Glove, which uses fiber-optic wires
extending to all parts of the hand to measure even minute changes in
position, Microsoft was able to accurately map hand topology, both at
rest and in typical positions during mouse use.

Combined with other research tools and in-depth video analysis of
mouse use sessions, Microsoft fine-tuned several carved models to test
mouse styles for actual use, comfort and aesthetics.
