Yes and no. "Holograph" was originally coined by people either in
publiching or in English Lit. to refer to a book that is in complete
manuscript form, including cross-outs, edits, etc.
Something like that. 

The term dates from the 40's or 50's.

"graphos" and "writing" both clearly refer to visual artifacts. 
"writing" has since been extended to other media by a metaphorical use
of the verb "to write".
