The main theme of the conference this year is "Communicating with Virtual Worlds". A program committee including the best international experts has carefully selected the best papers from all the submitted papers. This year most papers are related to user interfaces, Virtual Reality, parallel processing, rendering techniques, image processing, and geometric modeling. I hope that you will enjoy this conference and that stimulating virtual and real exchanges will take place. ========================================================================== Invited Speakers: ------------------ Jim Clark is Chairman of the Board of Silicon Graphics Inc. He hold a M.S. degree in physics and was awarded a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Utah in 1974. He then spent three years at the University of California, two years consulting and the last four years as an Associate Professor at Stanford University. He founded Silicon Graphics in 1981 to produce advanced high performance geometric processing workstations based upon his past work in these fields. Michael F. Cohen is an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at Princeton University. He holds a Ph.D. from the Univerisity of Utah, and an M.S. degree from Cornell University. From 1985-1988, he was on the faculty of the Program of Computer Graphics at Cornell University where he conducted research in the area of realistic image synthesis, in particular, the development of the Radiosity Method. He has also made contributions in the area of physically based animation of linked figures. Rae A. Earnshaw is Head of Computer Graphics at the University of Leeds. He has authored and edited 17 books on graphics algorithms, computer graphics, scientific visualization and associated topics. Dr. Earnshaw is Chair of the British Society's Computer Graphics and Displays Group. Mike Gigante is the Director of the Advanced Computer Graphics Centre at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. He has been at RMIT since 1985 where he has pursued his teaching and research interests in Computer Graphics and CAD. His research areas are Image Synthesis, Real-Time Computer Graphics, Virtual Reality and Computer Graphics in Education. Huw Jones is Principal Lecturer in Computer Graphics at Middlesex Polytechnic, where he is leader of the MSc Computer Graphics course. He is a Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society and Vice-Chair of the British Computer Society's Computer Graphics and Displays Group. He has co-authored or co-edited four books on Computer Graphics related topics. Arie Kaufman is a Professor of Computer Science and the Director of the Cube project for volume visualization at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. Currently, he is the chair of the IEEE Computer Society Technical Committee on Computer Graphics. He has lectured widely and published numerous technical manuscripts in volume visualization and computer graphics architectures. Tosiyasu L. Kunii is currently Professor of Information and Computer Science at the University of Tokyo. He authored and edited more than 32 computer science books, and published more than 120 refereed academic/technical papers. Dr. Kunii is Honorary President and Founder of the Computer Graphics Society, fellow of IEEE, editor-in-Chief of "The Visual Computer". Aaron Marcus is an internationally recognized authority on graphic design for computer graphics, especially chart, form, document icon, and screen design. He was given knowledge visualization, user interface design, and document design tutorials at SIGCHI, SIGGRAPH, and NCGA conferences in addition to tutorials at companies and conferences in the USA, Australia, Canada, Europe, Israel, Singapore, and Japan. Eihachiro Nakamae is a Professor at Hiroshima Prefectural University. He was a Professor at Hiroshima University from 1968 to 1992. Professor Nakamae is well-known for his research in light and illumination models. He has published numerous papers recognized world-wide. Gregory M. Nielson is a professor of computer science and adjunct professor of mathematics at Arizona State University. He has lectured and published widely on the topics of curve and surface representation and design, interactive computer graphics, scattered data interpolation, and the analysis and visualization of multivariate data. Robert Parslow, consultant with PA Ltd, is a Computer Graphics Pionneer. He is an executive of the British Computer Society Displays Group. His current research and consultancy is concerned with providing solutions to learning problems, particularly in the field of 3D Envisioning. Wolfgang Strasser is full Professor of Computer Science, adjunct Professor of Mathematics and Director of the Computer Graphics Laboratory at Universitat Tubingen (Germany), where research in Scientific Visualization, Geometric Modelling, Computer Vision and VLSI Design of High-performance graphics systems is done. He was head of the information processing department at Heinrich-Hertz Institute in Berlin, then Professor at Technical University Darmstadt. David Sturman is a member of the research and Development Group of Medialab in Paris, a company specializing in high-end computer graphics and custom virtual reality systems. His research interests include real-time computer animation and human-computer interfaces. He completed his Ph.D. at the MIT Media Lab in 1992, where he investigated real-time computer interaction using whole-hand input. Geoff Wyvill started as a research technologist with the British Petroleum Company. He gained MSC and Ph.D. degrees in computer science from the University of Bradford where he lectured in computer science from 1969 until 1978. This course provides an overview of the field, the nomenclature, the technology and the techniques with an emphasis on the algorithms, tools, and the associated applications. The course covers and compares different approaches in volume representation, fitting of surfaces to volume data, volume viewing, volume shading, volume synthesis and applications of volume visualization. Attendees will become familiar with the technology and several major applications, understand the available tools and techniques, and recognize the challenges confronting this emerging field. After giving a brief historical background and motivations of Virtual Reality, the authors will present hardware configurations and software techniques for building immersive and desktop VT applications. New approaches into building numerical mock-ups and extracting the information an architect needs involves object oriented databases and a structure that allows a multi-media description of the Design Object. Generating images, animation, and physical models out of the numerical description of an object implies a different approach of the design process and the use of visual simulation tools.
