The purpose of this Workshop is to provide an international forum to present, discuss and evaluate new designs of displays for visual and auditory exploration of scientific data. It seeks to bring developers and users of both visual and auditory displays of data together with perception researchers for the purpose of making such displays more perceptually effective. The workshop will offer both invited refereed papers and much time for discussion. This workshop is limited to 20 participants. IEEE VISUALIZATION'93 CONFERENCE The IFIP Workshop is being held in conjunction with the IEEE Visualization'93 Conference. The Visualization'93 Call for Participation is appended to this CFP. WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION The designers of visual and auditory displays of scientific data seek to harness perceptual processes for data exploration. The general aim is to provide ways for raw data and the statistical and mathematical structures they comprise to speak for themselves and thereby enable scientists to conduct exploratory as opposed confirmatory analyses of their data. The present primary approach via visualization depends mainly on coding data as positions of visually distinguishable elements in a two- or three- dimensional euclidean space, e.g., as discrete points comprising clusters in scatter-plot displays and as patches comprising the hills and valleys of statistical surfaces. These displays are immensely effective because the data are in a form that evokes natural perceptual processing of the data into impressions of the presence and spatial disposition of apparent materials, objects and structures in the viewers apparent physical environment. The problem with this mode of display however, is that its perceptual potency is largely exhausted at dimension three, and increasingly we face the need to explore data of dimensionality much greater than three. The challenge posed for the workshop participants is to come up with suggestions for new modes of display that can push the dimensionality of data displays higher while retaining the kind perceptual potency needed for data exploration. One obvious line of attack, and the suggested focus of the workshop, is to raise the dimensionality of the current, conventional position-coding displays by giving the plotted elements additional discriminable features besides their position. The plotted elements can be given additional visible features that, like their positioning, could also be put under data control. Color, size and shape coding of the plotted elements have often been employed in attempts to raise the effective dimensionality of scatter-plot displays. Real color coding is now commonly employed, and with considerable perceptual effectiveness, to raise the dimensionality surface displays. Various kinds of geometric codes (glyphs and icons) have also been tried. By providing ways for analysts to pluck or strum the visual elements electronically, their dimensionality can also be raised with data-controllable auditory features. The workshop will look to the computer science participants to suggest the pallette of possible forms and dimensions of distinguishable coding that could be implemented with current or imminent state of the art. There surely are many possibilities and that in itself is a problem, particularly when considering not just individual features, but features in combination. The workshop will look to the perception researchers to provide some leads for those choices as may come for example from our emerging knowledge of preattentive perceptual processes. WORKSHOP FORMAT AND PROGRAM The Workshop format allows for the formal presentation of the papers to be accepted for inclusion in the preprints. These presentations are designed to serve as catalysts for discussion. In addition, there will be a few invited papers and several workshop discussion sessions with designated discussion topics. The Workshop will conclude with presentations by session rapporteurs. The participants will have an opportunity to review the final draft of the proceedings prior to publication by Springer-Verlag. The Workshop will start at 9:00 am on Saturday 23 October and conclude at 5:00 pm on Sunday 24 October. PAPER SUBMISSIONS (Due 31 July 1993) Papers are solicited that present research results related to all areas of perception and visualization, including visual and auditory perception research as applied to visualization, visualization tools and methods that harness perception, evaulation environments, and applied perception research. Position papers will also be accepted. Papers should be limited to 5,000 words and may be accompanied by NTSC video. Please submit 5 copies of all materials to one of the conference co-chairs. THE PROCEEDINGS The Proceedings of the Workshop will be published by Springer-Verlag and will contain a selection of the papers from the preprints plus the rapporteurs' reports. There is a Park and Recreation conference that is using most of the hotel rooms the week before our worskhop, and has 417 (of the 500) rooms booked on Friday and 345 booked on Saturday. It is the largest conference that San Jose has ever had!
