Net income was $26 million for the quarter, compared with $13 million in the same period for the prior fiscal year. Earnings per share were $.34 per share versus $.19 per share for the same quarter in the prior fiscal year. Edward R. McCracken, Silicon Graphics' president and CEO commented, "Our continued momentum in the marketplace drove our 31% revenue growth over the prior year's summer quarter. SILICON GRAPHICS SUCCESSFULLY COMPUTES LARGEST COMPUTATIONAL FLUID DYNAMICS PROBLEM Company Uses CHALLENGEarray 16/320 Supercomputing Server in Conjunction with University of Minnesota Silicon Graphics, Inc. announced that, on a CHALLENGEarray 16/320 supercomputing server, it has successfully executed the largest computational fluid dynamics (CFD) problem ever. The company, working with the University of Minnesota and the Army High Performance Computing Research Center (AHPCRC), ran the Grand Challenge class problem during September, 1993. Silicon Graphics and the Minnesota research team decided to work together when professor Paul Woodward discovered that he could not get the desired resolution on the systems at the University of Minnesota/Army High Performance Computing Research Center, one of the largest supercomputing facilities in the world. Working with the Minnesota team, Silicon Graphics put together a parallel system configuration that had 320 100 MHz MIPS(r) R4400(tm) processors, 28 Gigabytes of main memory and 192 Gigabytes of disk. "When we introduced the Challenge(tm) server product line in January, we claimed we were going to change the supercomputing paradigm. We configured the CHALLENGEarray, optimized the code and ran the largest CFD problem ever within five weeks, demonstrating that we can deliver on our promises," said Forest Baskett, senior vice president of research and development at Silicon Graphics. "With the Challenge line, Silicon Graphics will continue to provide the supercomputing solutions needed for Grand Challenge problems with cost-effective, general purpose, off-the-shelf hardware." The CFD problem that was computed on the CHALLENGEarray 16/320 was a compressible turbulence analysis problem that utilized a cube of 10243 mesh. In this particular problem, a cube of fluid is divided into 1024 cells in each direction resulting in a total of one billion computational zones. The computational method of domain decomposition was then applied to the CFD problem and mapped onto the CHALLENGEarray architecture to facilitate an efficient method of calculating the problem. The calculation is scientifically valuable because it will provide greater insight into the fundamental nature of compressible turbulence. "We were very pleased to learn how little reprogramming of our PPM gas dynamics code was required to extract 4.9 Gigaflops out of a possible peak performance of 16 Gigaflops from the CHALLENGEarray 16/320," said University of Minnesota professor Paul Woodward. "We spent two to three weeks tuning our implementation and were delighted with the result. Our collaboration with Silicon Graphics allowed us to attack a grand challenge turbulence problem whose solution had previously seemed beyond the scope of current computational resources." To solve this kind of CFD challenge, periodic boundary conditions were applied in which an identical cube was mathematically placed on each side, top and bottom of the cube. Data generated from the calculation can also be used to create hypothetical models of turbulence that attempt to do calibrations quickly by using a model rather than solving real equations. The work Woodward and his team have done in compressible turbulence analysis may be used to be understand astrophysics, jet engine turbulence or the behavior of a wake behind a supersonic aircraft. - end - THIRD PARTY PRESS RELEASES ========================== 3. DIS AND VIRTUAL REALITY NETWORKING WITH VR-LINK(TM) VR-Link(TM), from MaK Technologies of Cambridge, Massachusetts, is now available for IRIX 5.0 and higher. VR-Link(TM) is the only third party Distributed Interactive Simulation (DIS) toolkit commercially available. It provides simulation engineers and virtual world developers with the ability to network hundreds of simulations together through low bandwidth connections. The toolkit adheres to the Department of Defense's DIS 2.0.3 protocol, and has been selling extremely well to DOD, defense contractors, and academia for the past year. The toolkit is also being integrated into networked arcade games and home video games. MaK also sells two applications based on VR-Link(TM), a Stealth Vehicle, and Data Logger. The Stealth Vehicle, which uses SGI's Performer(TM), provides an out-the-window 3-D view onto the world terrain, with navigation and flying capabilities. The Data Logger is a network packet recorder which can capture, store, and replay a perfect record of the exercise session. The predictive algorithms in VR-Link(TM) allow entities on the network to greatly reduce the frequency of rebroadcasts of state. Depending on desired accuracy, each entity requires from 20 to 500 bytes per second to update the world. Military systems have demonstrated over 1000 geographically dispersed entities on ethernet. With compression, 9600 baud modems attached to standard telephone lines can support approximately 10 to 50 players interacting within the same virtual world. The DIS protocol is self-healing. Players can enter and leave at will without disturbing other participants (other than their appearance and disappearance), and dropped packets don't cause system failure. Since VR-Link(TM) provides each node with an up-to-date external world model, no central server is necessary, and there is no single point of failure. MaK is currently establishing relationships, and integrating VR-Link(TM), with graphics software vendors such as Sense8, Division, Paradigm, Gemini, and Silicon Graphics (Performer). Once a few suitable graphics packages are integrated, MaK will seek out game makers to develop networked application titles. This will represent a challenge for conventional game makers who are not used to free play environments or multiple participants. Cable TV companies are examining VR-Link(TM) as a possible basis for interactive home-based VR games. MaK is presently designing architectures for a cable-based system. MaK also performs contract research for the DOD in experimental network protocols. One experimental development, called the Newtonian Protocol, will provide a network force-feedback mechanism. When tactile and force-feedback input devices become commercially available, a network mechanism will already exist in VR-Link(TM) to provide the ability to "touch" remote objects in the virtual world. Another experimental protocol soon to be incorporated into VR-Link(TM) is the Migratory Object Protocol, a mechanism by which nodes can exchange ownership of simulation objects.
