From: Kenneth Pimentel Subject: EVENT: Guggenheim Museum SoHo - New York Could you please post? VIRTUAL REALITY: AN EMERGING MEDIUM GUGGENHEIM MUSEUM SOHO SATURDAY, OCT. 23 -- MONDAY, NOVEMBER 1 What: ==== The Guggenheim Museum SoHo, in collaboration with the Intel Corporation, is presenting the first virtual reality exhibit offered by an American art museum. The presentation highlights the potential for VR when applied to art, music, education and business. Many of the virtual worlds in the presentation are on exhibit for the first time. The Worlds & Artists: -------------------- Piece: Untitled (July 93) ========================= Description: Based on the book "The Lost Ones" by Samuel Beckett.Floating cubes with faces, wander a toroid (dougnut-shaped) world and either run-away or aggressively approach the viewer when you get close to them. If they are aggressive, they will speak to you when they get up close. Many of the faces undergo transformations as you watch them. The cubes wander endlessly about, randomly heading in different directions and bouncing off the toroid's surface. Conceived and created by: Jenny Holzer Lead programmers: Kenneth Pimentel, Sense8 Corporation Pat Gelband, Sense8 Corporation Piece: Untitled (October 93) ============================ Description: The viewer enters a limitless landscape with textured skies and landscape. They eventually come upon a small village of cube-shaped houses. Each house is a different color and has an open door. If they enter the room, they hear a voice circle around them and talk to them. Some of the houses are inhabited by victims of rape, some by the perpetrators and some by observers of rape. Each time you exit the house, a new sky and landscape is randomly chosen. Conceived and created by: Jenny Holzer Lead programmers: Jeffry Donovan, InWorld VR Inc/Sense8 Corporation Piece: Virtual String Quartet ============================= Description: By tickling virtual representations of the membver of a string quartet, viewers prompt them to improvise unconventional solos. The real arm movemen of the musicans has been accurately mapped and is synthcronized with the music. Each musican also has alternate, hidden personalities, which can be released by the user. Conceived and created by: Thomas Dolby with Eric Gullischen Lead programmers: Eric Gullischen Piece: The Networked Virtual Art Museum: Temple of Horus ======================================================== Description: A virtual ancient egyptian temple with software agents as talking statues and animated murals which tell the story of the temple. Highly interactive, this new learning application puts history and art and architecture into their correct context while users learn via discovery. It also poses a challenge to museums -- when art is on the network, what good is a museum? Conceived and created by: The Studio for Creative Inquiry at Carnegie Mellon Univeristy by Carl Loeffler, Lynn Holden Lead programmers: many others contributed time to this project Piece: The Metaphor Mixer ========================= Viewers can fly through a virtual stock portfolio that illustrates a variety of investment information and interact with a software agent that will help them make an analysis. With real-time data feeds, this is a true cyberspace experience. Conceived and created by: Paul Marshall,Maxus Systems International Lead programmers: Glenn Davis, Sense8 Kenneth Pimentel, Sense8 All the worlds will be running on Pentium-processor based PCs and were built using WorldToolKit from Sense8 (except the Dolby piece). All the systems will have HMDs, head-tracking, 3D sound, etc. We will be using the following equipment: Gravis UltraSound, Crystal River Engineering Convolvotron and Beachtron, Polhemus FASTRAK and ISOTRAK II, Virtual Research EyeGen3, Virtual I/O HMD, SPEA Fire board, Kraft Thunderstick joystick, and misc hw. All these applications and this exhibit were developed in collaboration with the Intel Digital Education and Arts (IDEA) program.
