A Intercommunication- system is developed and connected to Internet, the network of networks with a potential of millions of users worldwide. Besides Internet, individuals who want to take part, can dial direct into the system. The System allows communication with voice, sound, touchtone, modem, computer, fax, still images and video. Based on these possibilities, specifications are made public to allow interested groups (universities, companies, programmers) to develop and download applications on the system. These applications compete to be used by the users on Internet, and can be games, virtual worlds, landscapes, museums. Thus a process is initiated of a world growing within a computer, having the properties of real worlds and going beyond. Van Gogh TV and the Ponton European Media Art Lab Ponton is a working laboratory, as well as planning-, production- and transmitting-facility founded in 1986 and with facilities in Hamburg since 1989. Artists and technicians work together with new technologies to create fruitful forms of artistic and electronic expression. The Piazza Virtuale is a step forward for media art of the future, in which interactive television can be an important collective form of expression.
