From: Robert Jacobson Subject: INDUSTRY: Two worlds of VR? Organization: WORLDESIGN, Seattle I was reading a posting on comp.graphics.visualization all about the IEEE Frontiers of VR Conference taking place in San Jose later this year. I was struck by how completely the conference is dominated by university faculty members, to the almost complete exclusion of people working in industry. Then I noted several discussions of 3D sound at this conference, while here on sci.virtual-worlds there have been several unanswered (at least in public) postings requesting practical information on 3D sound for industrial applications. There is an interesting dichotomy setting up in our "community," to no one's advantage. I have no solutions to recommend. There is nothing compelling academe and business to mingle, other than the crass motive of funding. Challenge parochialism. Bob Jacobson Worldesign Inc.
