Whiteside will be responsible for research and development, marketing and alliance activities associated with the MIPS open RISC architecture. He will report to Wei Yen, senior vice president of Silicon Graphics, Inc. MIPS Technologies is a separate operating unit and a wholly owned subsidiary of Silicon Graphics. "We are delighted to have Tom join MIPS Technologies," said Edward R. McCracken, president and chief executive officer of Silicon Graphics. "Tom has proven himself to be a strong leader and manager with an impressive track record in the semiconductor industry. Silicon Graphics has more than tripled its investment in open RISC development since its merger with MIPS. Tom's expertise will keep MIPS Technologies at the forefront of the computer industry." Whiteside joined IBM in 1982 and in 1984 became manager of RT RISC design. He later was responsible for all RISC microprocessors and has lead the development of PowerPC since its inception. The product, which will be developed specifically for Nintendo, will be unveiled in arcades in 1994, and will be available for home use by late 1995. At the heart of the system will be a version of the MIPS(r) Multimedia Engine, a chip-set consisting of a 64-bit MIPS RISC microprocessor, a graphics co-processor chip and Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs). For the first time, leading-edge MIPS RISC microprocessor technology will be used in the video entertainment industry creating new levels of speed, realism and excitement. The graphics co-processor and ASICs provide the specialized audio, video and graphics capabilities. The same MIPS RISC microprocessor family today powers computers ranging from PCs to supercomputers. THE XSB LOGIC PROGRAMMING SYSTEM. We are happy to announce a port of XSB, a Prolog-based Logic Programming System, to the SGI. XSB is a descendant of SB-Prolog. Besides providing all the functionalities of a Prolog system, XSB includes an optimizing compiler, a module system, list processing libraries, and dynamic loading. Furthermore, it extends Prolog by including implementations of OLDT (tabling) and HiLog terms. The XSB distribution includes all source code and a user's manual. The system can be compiled using the GNU C compiler, and besides the SGI it has currently been tested on several other platforms, however, porting XSB to any 32-bit machine running Unix, should be straightforward. The current version of XSB is 1.2. In the following we briefly describe new features of XSB (that are not provided by other Prolog systems), and finally we give instructions on how to ftp XSB. OLDT resolution is useful for recursive query computation, allowing programs to terminate correctly in many cases where Prolog does not. Users interested in Parsing, Program Analysis, and memory-resident Deductive Database applications may benefit from XSB. XSB's OLDT implementation: -- Is incorporated at the emulator level for maximal efficiency. The speed improvement over meta-interpreters written by the XSB group is 2-3 orders of magnitude, with considerable improvements in space as well. -- Evaluates programs with (left-to-right modularly) stratified negation and aggregation. -- Allows for declaration of tabled predicates either automatically by the system or manually by the user. -- Provides standard tabling predicates which can be used to program a number of applications like meta-interpreters for the well-founded semantics (provided as an example program). -- Allows full Prolog functionality in tabled code, including cuts (subject to weak semantic restructions), meta-logical predicates, second-order predicates, etc. HiLog supports a type of higher-order programming in which predicate symbols can be variable or structured. This allows unification to be performed on the predicate symbols themselves in addition to the arguments of the predicates. XSB's HiLog implementation: -- Includes a fully integrated HiLog preprocessor. HiLog terms can be used anywhere in XSB, including the interpreter level. -- Provides a number of meta-logical standard predicates for HiLog terms. Compiler optimizations for HiLog terms are currently under development. The book is divided into two sections. The first section is a general explanation of imake, X configuration files, and how to write and debug an Imakefile. The second section describes how to write configuration files, and presents a configuration file architecture that allows development of coexisting sets of configuration files. The book provides documentation for imake and associated tools, as well as exercises to build hands-on experience. Several sets of configuration files are described and are available free over the Internet. imake is a utility that works with make to enable code to be automatically configured, compiled and installed on different UNIX machines. imake makes possible the wide portability of the X Window System code and is widely considered to be an X tool, but it's also useful for any software project that needs to be ported to many UNIX systems. It lays out the directories in a hierarchy with each directory represented by a pedestal. The height of the pedestal is proportional to the size of the files in the directory. The directories are connected by wires, on which it is possible to travel. On top of each directory are boxes representing individual files. The height of the box represents the size of the file, while the color represents the age. Fsn is intended as an investigation in information landscape navigation. Although the file system was chosen as a system to navigate through, similar paradigms could be applied to other trees and graphs, such as call graphs. Keep in mind that fsn is a prototype and an experiment. It is neither a full featured product nor a replacement for a filesystem manager such as Workspace.
