More seriously, at the recent (yesterday) Conference of the FIVE (Framework for Immersive Virtual Environments) Working Group, several people presented and discussed on the topic of 'cyber-sickness' and general after effects of immersive environments. Two spring to mind, Sarah Nichols working at VIVART (Virtual Reality Applications Research Team), University of Nottingham, and Robert Kennedy of Essex Corporation. The latter has extensive experience with military simulators of various types, stretching back over 30 years. Personally i feel the out-of-body experiences, or hallucinations afforded by VR systems do not compare to those from traditional methods (eg anoxia), nor will they until we perfect direct nervous stimulation.
