I strongly disagree with that statement.  It's not the tool of choice
today, but what package from 3-4 years ago is?  It's was a great package
(thanks Bernie & Dave) that was FREE.

If you're into programming, Sense8's WTK and Dive Labs Amber are 
good packages to check out.  VREAM's VRcreator looks good for a
point and click.
