Michael,

The concept you're talking about sounds very like what John Craig's
crew at Silma, does with their robot simulation product (prod. name is
"simstation" or something similar.)  When last I saw this demo'ed, it
was in 3-D graphics, but wasn't fully-immersive.  However, the
fidelity was excellent.  Silma is in the Bay area, (408 probably
<Cupertino?>, 415 possible.)  Suggest you read comp.robotics.research,
and possibly post your query there, too.
