On the one hand, areas such as complex adaptive systems, artificial life and evolutionary computation often conceive of agents as relatively simple, but adaptive reactive entities in which emergent phenomena arise through interactions between these agents and with their environment. On the other hand, a more classical artificial intelligence approach to agents emphasises an engineered construction of intelligent/software agents, using the machinery of planning, machine learning, and so forth. The aim of this workshop will be to contrast the various conceptions of agenthood, including what applications the contrasting conceptions are best suited for. The workshop will be a combination of some formal presentation of papers, together with informal discussions, presentations of position papers and cv's, and posters. Chris Langton from the Santa Fe Institute will be attending the workshop. Chris is well-known for his work on artificial life and his current role in developing the *Swarm* software system to assist in the exploration of complex adaptive systems. Together with the Third Australian Complex Systems Conference, it is intended to run a hands-on workshop introducing the Echo and Swarm aLife simulation systems, as well as provide an introduction to complex adaptive systems. We hope the workshop will: 1. establish links amongst researchers in these areas in Australasia with those overseas; and 2. encourage researchers to explore the links between artificial life and complex adaptive systems with those of software/intelligent agents and classical areas of artificial intelligence. We invite the submission of papers, position papers and cv's on the theme of the workshop, including both theoretical and practical papers. We encourage papers from postgraduate students working in these areas. The workshop is timed to follow the Third Australian Complex Systems Conference being held in Albury, Australia, on 14-18 July. PROGRAM COMMITTEE The program committee for the workshop is the same as that for the Complex Systems Conference. WORKSHOP OUTLINE This workshop will be a full-day workshop on 19th July, with a tutorial workshop on Echo and Swarm probably held in the evening of 18 July. The workshop will be held in Albury, Australia. We intend to keep the number of participants to around 20-30 to give scope for all attendees to actively participate in the workshop. WORKSHOP COSTS An indication of the approximate cost of the workshop is: $100 (Australian) for attendees of the Complex Systems Conference; $50 (Australian) for student attendees of the Complex Systems Conference; $200 (Australian) for non-attendees to the Complex Systems Conference; $100 (Australian) for student non-attendees to the Complex Systems Conference. WORKSHOP FORMAT We intend to alternate formal and informal presentation of papers and positions with informal discussion sessions on a number of topics. Presentations will be limited to around 15 minutes. PAPER SUBMISSION Submission of Full Papers Follow the instructions as for the Complex Systems Conference. Submission of Extended Abstracts, Position Papers, Poster Abstracts and CVs These should be no more than three A4 pages, printed single spaced in 12 point font on A4 paper. The first page should include the paper title, author(s) name(s), complete addresses including email address and fax number. Also indicate the type of submission (extended abstract, ...). MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSION Only electronic submission of the paper will be accepted. Electronic submission of papers must be in TeX or LaTeX format, whilst position papers and cv's can be in plain text. All submissions must be written in English. A full paper will be refereed in the same manner as papers submitted to the Complex Systems Conference. If possible, please submit ahead of the submission date so that we can be sure that the file is printable: if we cannot print your file by the submission date it may be rejected without review. Abstracts and expressions of interest can be submitted via the form present in the Complex Systems Conference page. Subsequently, a printed summary of the informal discussions will be distributed to participants.
